Wageningen University Excellence Scholarship 2027: Who Qualifies for the Tuition Waiver and How Selection Works

·

Wageningen University & Research is one of the world’s leading universities for life sciences, food systems, agriculture, environment, and sustainability. For international students, the cost of a two-year Master’s is often the first obstacle. Non-EU/EFTA tuition is estimated at about €21,900 for 2026/2027 and €22,500 for 2027/2028.

That is why the Wageningen University Excellence Scholarship 2027 matters. It does not pay every cost of living in the Netherlands. It does something more targeted: it removes the full tuition fee for 24 months if you are among the selected candidates. The difference is large enough to change whether a top-ranked MSc in Wageningen is financially realistic.

This guide explains who can apply, what the award actually covers, why the 1 December 2026 deadline is unforgiving, and how the final selection works. The details below follow the official Excellence Programme rules for students starting an on-campus MSc in September 2027. Always confirm the latest wording on the university’s scholarship pages before you submit.

Scholarship Summary

  • Host Country: Netherlands
  • Host University: Wageningen University & Research (WUR)
  • Scholarship Type: MSC Scholarships
  • Eligible Countries: Selected Countries
  • Scholarship Benefits: Full tuition fee, Living stipend, etc.

What the Excellence Programme Is Designed to Do

Wageningen created the Excellence Programme to attract outstanding international Master’s students and to keep its classroom geographically diverse. The university also looks for candidates who may later pursue a PhD in Wageningen or elsewhere.

The award is not open to students who are already enrolled at WUR. It is only for prospective students starting an eligible on-campus MSc in September. February intakes and online Master’s programmes are outside this scheme.

If your profile is strong but you hold an EU or EFTA passport in addition to one of the eligible nationalities, you are not eligible. Dual nationality with an EU or EFTA country is a hard disqualifier.

What the Wageningen University Excellence Scholarship 2027 Covers, and What It Does Not

The Excellence Scholarship is a tuition fee waiver for the full duration of a standard two-year Master’s programme (24 months).

That is valuable. It is not a fully funded package.

Selected students who accept the award receive a revised first-year invoice. Tuition is removed from that invoice. Remaining first-year costs still have to be paid. Those remaining costs typically include:

  • Living allowance
  • Health and liability insurance
  • Residence permit fee

Based on the current fee structure, the revised first-year invoice is approximately €16,500 and must be paid before 1 July 2027.

Plan your budget around that figure. Housing in Wageningen, food, books, travel, and daily expenses remain your responsibility. Official study-cost estimates for non-EU/EFTA students put living expenses in the region of €27,600 over the costing period used by the university, plus insurance and permit fees.

If you need a scholarship that also covers flights, insurance, visa costs, and a living stipend, look at other WUR schemes such as the Africa Scholarship Programme or the Anne van den Ban Fund. Those awards have different target groups and are also invitation-based.

Eligible Countries for the 2027 Excellence Scholarship

Eligibility is narrower than “any non-EU country.” WUR selects a defined list of countries to keep the international classroom balanced.

Applicants must hold the nationality of at least one of the following countries:

  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • Cuba
  • Ecuador
  • Guatemala
  • Japan
  • Malaysia
  • Mexico
  • New Zealand
  • Peru
  • Singapore
  • South Korea
  • Thailand
  • Turkey
  • United Kingdom
  • United States of America

You must not also hold EU or EFTA nationality.

If your country is not on this list, do not force an Excellence application. Use the official Master’s scholarships overview and country-specific funding lists instead. WUR points applicants toward home-country schemes such as Capes (Brazil), Becas Chile, CSC (China), Colfuturo and Icetex (Colombia), LPDP (Indonesia), Pronabec (Peru), and others.

Who Can Be Considered for Wageningen University Excellence Scholarship 2027

You need to meet every requirement below. Missing one usually ends consideration before the selection committee even ranks files.

  1. You hold the nationality of at least one eligible country listed above and do not hold EU or EFTA nationality.
  2. You submitted a complete application for an eligible on-campus MSc programme at Wageningen University & Research before 1 December 2026.
  3. You are unconditionally admitted to that MSc programme.
  4. You have a high GPA of 80% or higher. A First Class Honours BSc, or an equivalent result, is required.

“Complete application” is the phrase that trips many strong candidates. For this scholarship cycle, a complete Master’s file includes the supporting documents the university requires, and two items have explicit cut-off dates:

  • Official English language test results must be available and uploaded before 1 December 2026.
  • Your Bachelor’s degree must be completed before 1 December 2026, and the diploma must be uploaded before that date.

English tests take weeks to book, sit, and receive. Do not leave this until November. WUR currently accepts specified scores on IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Pearson PTE Academic, LanguageCert Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced, and Cambridge C2 Proficiency. Online or home editions of several tests are not accepted. Check the official English language page for exact scores and exemptions.

The Deadline That Actually Matters

Regular admission deadlines for a September start can run later than the scholarship cut-off. That does not help you here.

Only Master’s applications submitted before 1 December 2026 will be assessed by the WU Scholarship Selection Committee.

If your file is incomplete on that date, you may still be admitted later as a self-funded student. You will not be in the Excellence pool.

Start with the official application steps:

  1. Select your programme(s) in Studielink.
  2. Upload documents in the Osiris application portal.
  3. Wait for document assessment.
  4. Receive the admission decision.
  5. Complete enrolment steps if admitted.

Use the official apply page for the current cycle status and programme-specific admission rules: Apply for a master’s programme.

How Selection Works: Invitation, Then a Lottery

You cannot fill in a separate Excellence Scholarship form on day one. The process is coordinated by the WU Scholarship Selection Committee and runs on invitation.

Around March–April 2027, a number of applicants will be told by email that they have reached the final stage. In that final stage, a lottery determines the recipients.

On 7 April 2027, the Excellence Scholarship is offered to the selected students. Remaining finalists go on a waiting list.

That lottery step surprises people who expect a pure ranking. Academic excellence gets you into the final group. After that, allocation is not a guaranteed ranking of the single highest GPA. Prepare a complete, excellent file. Do not assume a 90% average automatically beats every other shortlisted candidate.

If you receive and accept the offer, WUR issues the revised first-year invoice with tuition waived. Pay the remaining amount before 1 July 2027.

Other Wageningen Master’s Scholarships Worth Checking

The Excellence Programme is one of several invitation-based awards listed for academic year 2027–2028. The others are:

  • Africa Scholarship Programme (ASP): Aimed at talented students from African countries. Coverage is typically broader than Excellence and can include travel, a living allowance, tuition, visa costs, and health insurance.
  • Anne van den Ban Fund (ABF): Supports outstanding students from low-income countries. Awards may be partial or full. Individual open applications are not the usual route; selected candidates are approached.
  • NL Scholarship: A contribution toward tuition (historically a one-time payment in the first year, sometimes awarded at a higher amount). Living costs, visa, and insurance are generally not included. Country lists and rules differ from the Excellence Programme.

Compare awards carefully. A “Netherlands scholarship” headline on a third-party site often mixes these programmes together and calls all of them fully funded. They are not the same.

For a wider search beyond WUR funding, use ScholarshipPortal and Nuffic resources for study in the Netherlands. Many applicants combine a university waiver with a home-country loan or grant.

Costs After the Waiver: Plan the First Invoice

Non-EU/EFTA students normally receive an invoice that bundles first-year tuition, 12.5 months of living allowance, insurance, and the residence permit. Payment is due by 1 July before a September start.

Excellence recipients still face that process, minus tuition. Treat €16,500 as the working first-year figure unless WUR sends a different official invoice. Students without a European IBAN usually need a Dutch bank account and should bring card or cash for the first weeks.

Questions on admission, enrolment, fees, or housing should go to the Student Service Centre through the official contact form on the WUR website.

How to Build a Competitive File Before 1 December 2026

The committee only sees complete, unconditionally admitted files. Use the months before the deadline on items you can control.

  • Choose an eligible on-campus MSc that matches your Bachelor’s background. Weak subject fit can block unconditional admission even with a high GPA.
  • Confirm how WUR converts your grading scale. The 80% / First Class rule is strict.
  • Book an accepted English test early. Upload the official result before 1 December 2026.
  • Graduate on time. If your diploma cannot be uploaded before the deadline, you are outside this scholarship cycle.
  • Write a focused motivation statement for the Master’s programme itself. There is no separate public essay portal at the first stage, but your admission file is the document set the university will use.
  • Track email from March 2027 onward. Final-stage messages are time-sensitive.

Official starting points:

Frequently Overlooked Points

Is this a fully funded Master’s scholarship?
No. It is a full tuition waiver. Living costs and several first-year administrative costs remain payable.

Can currently enrolled WUR students apply?
No. University scholarship programmes of this type are for prospective students only.

Can I apply if I finish my Bachelor’s in January 2027?
Not for this Excellence cycle. The Bachelor’s diploma must be completed and uploaded before 1 December 2026.

What if I am admitted but not selected?
You can still enrol as a fee-paying student if you can finance the invoice, or you can look at external funders and home-country schemes listed on the WUR scholarships page.

Does a waiting-list place mean I should delay payment planning?
No. Offers go out on 7 April 2027. The remaining invoice is still due before 1 July 2027 if you accept.

Final Takeaway

The Wageningen University Excellence Scholarship 2027 is one of the clearer high-value tuition awards in the Netherlands for a defined group of international Master’s applicants. The rules are specific: listed nationalities only, no EU/EFTA dual nationality, First Class-level grades, unconditional admission, and a complete file by 1 December 2026.

If you meet those conditions, treat the Master’s application itself as the scholarship application. Submit early enough to fix missing documents. Sit the English test with weeks to spare. Then watch for the March–April 2027 shortlist and the 7 April offer date.
