Every year, a small group of outstanding students from India and a handful of other developing countries arrive in the United Kingdom with their tuition paid, a living grant in place, and a return ticket home already booked. They did not win a generic “study abroad prize.” They won the Felix Scholarship.
The name comes from Latin: felix means happy, favourable, successful. That is the point of the award. An anonymous founder wanted gifted students who could not otherwise afford a UK degree to study at three universities known for academic seriousness, then take that training back to their own countries. Since 1991 the scheme has awarded more than 400 scholarships, about 20 each year. Most go to Indian nationals. A limited number go to students from other low-income countries.

What the Felix Scholarship Actually Covers

- A living stipend of around £19,000 a year at Oxford and around £17,894 at Reading (SOAS confirms living costs on award)

Awards last for the funded length of the course: usually one year for a taught Master’s and up to three years for a PhD or DPhil, subject to satisfactory progress. Medicine is excluded. All other subjects offered by the three partner universities are eligible. There is no official preference for science over humanities or vice versa.
The scholarship does not pay for a spouse or dependents. Married applicants can still apply, but they must fund a partner separately. UK living costs are high; that is a practical constraint, not a moral one.

Who Can Apply
There are two tracks: the Indian scholarship (the bulk of awards) and a small number of non-Indian awards.
Indian applicants
You generally need all of the following:
- Indian nationality and ordinary residence in India at the time of application
- At least a first-class Bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university (exceptionally, an upper-second Bachelor’s plus a first-class Master’s from India may be considered at some partners)
- No degree from a university outside India (previous Felix study is usually exempt)
- No previous study of one year or more outside India (again, Felix alumni are treated separately)
- An application for a new full-time Master’s or full-time DPhil/PhD. If you already hold a Master’s, you cannot use Felix for a second Master’s
- Demonstrable financial need: you could not take up the place without this support
- Intention to return home after the degree and to study a subject of benefit to your country
You apply to only one of the three universities for Felix purposes.
Non-Indian applicants
A small number of awards exist for academically excellent, underprivileged students who are not Indian and not EEA nationals. They must hold a first-class Bachelor’s (or equivalent) and are usually nominated by the university rather than applying as a separate open competition. Oxford makes one such award each year to a student ordinarily resident in a country listed as Least Developed or Other Low Income on the DAC list of ODA recipients. Reading and SOAS also run limited developing-country awards; SOAS has recently prioritised certain conflict-affected and low-income countries for its non-Indian award. Rules on not having studied outside the home country for a year or more still apply.
Financial need and the expectation of return home apply to both tracks.
The Three Host Universities
Felix is not a national UK government scheme. It is tied to three institutions only.
University of Oxford
Up to seven Felix awards in a typical year, including one non-Indian award. Coverage: full fees, about £19,000 living grant, return flight. No separate Felix form. You must apply for graduate admission by the December or January deadline that applies to your course. Late or waitlisted applications are not considered. Decisions are usually expected by the end of May. Shortlisted Indian candidates may complete a short questionnaire and attend interview in India.
University of Reading
Up to five awards for Indian citizens (Master’s or PhD) plus a limited developing-country Master’s award. Coverage: international fees, stipend of around £17,894, return flight, and related allowances. First secure an offer, then complete the Felix form in the applicant portal. The 2026 entry deadline has already closed; watch the Reading funding page for 2027 dates.
SOAS University of London
Full fees, living costs and return airfare for full-time taught Master’s or PhD programmes. Indian applicants apply through the SOAS admissions portal after starting a course application. Recent published deadline for the Indian award: 12 noon UK time on 2 March 2026. Shortlisted candidates interview online with Felix Trust members, not with SOAS staff. A separate Felix Non-Indian Scholarship page sets its own country focus and the same March window.

How Selection Works
Admission comes first. Without a confirmed (or at least firm) offer, you are not on the Felix shortlist.
Each university draws up a shortlist of candidates who meet academic and need criteria. For Indian applicants, those shortlists go to Felix Selection Committees. Shortlisted Indian candidates are invited to interview, historically in India for Oxford and online for SOAS. Non-Indian selection is handled more directly by the university, with Trust involvement at interview stage.
Committees look for:
- Outstanding academic record, not merely “good”
- Clear financial need
- Leadership potential and sound character
- A credible plan to use the degree at home
There is no subject quota. Medicine is the only blanket exclusion.

How to Apply Without Wasting a Cycle
Treat Felix as a two-step process.
- Apply early for admission at Oxford, Reading or SOAS. Oxford’s funding window is the course deadline in December or January. SOAS needs a complete admission file well before the scholarship cutoff because offers can take four to six weeks.
- Follow that university’s Felix instructions. Oxford: no extra form if you meet the January deadline. Reading: portal form after an offer. SOAS: scholarship application in the admissions portal by the published noon deadline.

English-language requirements are those of the course. Felix does not fund pre-sessional English.
Why the Award Still Matters
UK postgraduate fees for international students often exceed £25,000–£40,000 a year before rent. A living grant near £18,000–£19,000 is designed to cover modest student life, not luxury. Combined with a flight home, Felix removes the three costs that stop most high-achieving Indian applicants: fees, rent, and the ticket.
The founder’s condition that scholars return is not decorative. The scheme is built as a talent-circulation programme, not a migration route. Alumni updates on the Trust site show careers in public service, research, development and professional practice back in India and other partner countries.
Competition is intense because the cohort is small. Roughly 20 awards a year across three elite institutions means many first-class applicants will not be selected. That is why the strongest applications pair a first-class transcript with a precise statement of need and a clear home-country purpose.
Practical Timeline for 2027 Entry
Exact 2027 dates will appear on university sites from late 2026. Historically the pattern is:
- Autumn: finalise course choice and referees
- December–January: Oxford graduate deadline (this is the Felix deadline there)
- January–early March: Reading and SOAS scholarship forms
- March–April: university shortlisting
- April–May: interviews
- By end of May or June: outcomes
- October: start of term
Do not wait for a “Felix application window” at Oxford. Missing the course deadline ends the scholarship chance.
