A fully funded master’s in the Netherlands is competitive. For students from developing countries who want to study food systems, environment, agriculture or life sciences at one of the world’s top universities in those fields, the Anne van den Ban Fund (ABF) is one of the few routes that can cover tuition, living costs, travel, visa and insurance for a full 24-month MSc.

It is not an open application form. You apply for a Wageningen master’s programme. If you meet the criteria and receive unconditional admission, you may be invited. That single fact is why so many strong candidates miss it: they wait for a “scholarship application button” that does not exist.

The purpose is specific: give talented students from low-income and developing countries a master’s at Wageningen University & Research, then send that knowledge home. Graduates are expected to return and work on food security, environment, water, agriculture and related challenges in their own countries.

ABF awards are assigned in close cooperation with the university and are often combined with the WU Fellowship Programme. Awards can be full or partial, depending on other funding the student already has (family support, other grants, personal income). The fund tries to stretch resources so more students can study, not only a handful of fully funded places.

Who Can Be Considered for ABF 2027?

For the September 2027 intake, the university’s published criteria are:

International students from developing countries
Starting an MSc programme in September 2027
Unconditional admission to that MSc
Prospective students only (not students already enrolled at Wageningen)

The fund does not accept direct applications. Study coordinators and alumni working in low-income countries advise the board. The board of the Anne van den Ban Fund Foundation then selects together with Wageningen University, once a year.

Other finance is taken into account. If you already have partial support, ABF may top it up rather than award a full package. Students already in Wageningen on a one-year scholarship are not eligible for an ABF award to continue.

There is no public, exhaustive country list on the official scholarship page. Eligibility is framed as developing / low-income countries. If your nationality is in doubt, treat the official WUR pages as the source of truth and complete a strong MSc application anyway. Without unconditional admission, there is no ABF invitation.

What the Anne Van Den Ban Fund Scholarship Covers

For selected students starting in September 2027, the published components are:

Travel to and from the Netherlands
Living allowance for the duration of the programme (24 months)
Tuition fee coverage for the duration of the programme (24 months)
Visa costs and costs for health insurance

That package is designed to make a two-year MSc realistic, not only cheaper. Living costs in the Netherlands are high. A tuition waiver alone is rarely enough. The combination of tuition, stipend, travel, visa and insurance is why ABF is treated as a life-changing award by past recipients.

Awards can still be partial. The official selection page states that scholarships may be full or partial and that other sources of finance are considered so more students can be supported.

The Deadline That Actually Matters: 1 December 2026

You cannot apply to ABF. You apply to the master’s programme.

Only complete MSc applications submitted before 1 December 2026 will be assessed by the ABF selection committee.

“Complete” is not a slogan. Official notes highlight two items that regularly disqualify otherwise strong files:

You must meet the English language requirements before 1 December 2026. Official test results must be uploaded as part of the master’s application by that date. Booking a test in November and hoping scores arrive in time is a common failure.
You must have completed your bachelor’s degree before 1 December 2026 and uploaded the diploma as part of the complete master’s application.

Plan the English test weeks or months earlier. Plan graduation and diploma issuance earlier than you think you need. Incomplete files are not assessed.

Selection results for invited candidates only are communicated during May 2027 (exact date to be announced). The university notes that the exact notification date will be published on the scholarships page in autumn 2027. If you have not received an offer by early June in a typical cycle, you have not been selected.

How to Put Yourself in the Invitation Pool

1. Choose a Wageningen MSc that matches your background and a clear home-country need

Wageningen is globally strong in agriculture, food technology, environmental sciences, water, climate, animal sciences, development and related fields. ABF’s mission is capacity building after graduation. A coherent story — bachelor’s training, a defined problem in your region, a specific MSc track — is more persuasive than a generic “I want to study in Europe.”

2. Apply early and make the file complete

Submit the master’s application well before 1 December 2026. Do not treat the deadline as a target date. Leave room for missing transcripts, late diplomas and English scores.

3. Meet English requirements on time

Upload official results before the ABF assessment cutoff. Check current accepted tests and scores on the university’s admission pages.

4. Show academic strength and limited alternative funding

The fund looks for outstanding students from low-income settings. High grades matter. So does a realistic picture of other support. The board tries not to give a full award to someone who already has another full scholarship.

5. Do not send a separate ABF application

There is no portal for it. Individual applications to the fund are not considered. The only lever you control is a complete, competitive master’s application submitted on time.

How ABF Fits With Other Wageningen Scholarships

For the 2027–2028 academic year, Wageningen lists several invitation-based schemes for incoming September MSc students, including:

These are for prospective students only and for the September start only. WUR does not run these programmes for students already enrolled.

ASP is specifically for African citizens and is also invitation-only, with a similar fully funded package (travel, living allowance, tuition, visa, insurance). If you are African, you may be in range for both ASP and ABF depending on academic profile and how the university assigns invitations. Do not assume you can apply to both as separate forms. The mechanism is still: complete MSc application, then wait for an invitation.

Country-specific loans and scholarships also exist (for example CAPES in Brazil, LPDP in Indonesia, CSC in China, Colfuturo in Colombia). WUR lists many of these on the same scholarships page. Combining a national loan with a partial ABF award is exactly the kind of mix the fund sometimes uses.

Treat autumn 2026 as the last window to fix documents. After 1 December, there is no “upload later for ABF” path.

Common Mistakes That Cost an Invitation

ABF is not framed as a route to stay in the Netherlands indefinitely. The stated aim is return and contribution: use Wageningen training on problems in the student’s own country.
