What Makes the Yenching Academy Different
The Yenching Academy is a postgraduate college of Peking University created to train people who can interpret China with more than slogans. Scholars who keep good academic standing and plan to stay in Beijing for year two can apply for a second-year fellowship. Who Can Apply for Yenching Academy Scholarship
The academy enrolls roughly 120 new students each year. About 75% are international. The rest come from the Chinese Mainland and from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
Core requirements for most applicants:
- A bachelor’s degree in any field, or current enrollment with the degree awarded by August of the enrollment year (August 2027 for the 2027 cohort)
- An outstanding academic record
- Strong interest in the interdisciplinary study of China
- Extracurricular achievement, community engagement, social responsibility, and leadership potential
- English proficiency
International applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport. Former citizens of the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan who apply as international students must show a passport or citizenship documents issued before 30 April 2021 and proof that Chinese nationality was cancelled.
There is no hard age cap. In practice, excluding a separate Chinese government “Zhuoyue” track, the academy has not admitted anyone over 29, and the typical entering age is about 23.
Peking University does not allow concurrent enrollment in another degree program. If you are finishing a master’s elsewhere, that degree must be completed before you start.
English scores (tests taken after 1 September 2025; scores must be sent directly by the testing body):

- TOEFL iBT: 100 overall (institution code C488)
- Cambridge English Scale (Advanced): 185 overall

- TEM-4: “良好” or above
Native English speakers and graduates of English-taught degree programs generally do not need a test report. HMT applicants are still expected to submit a test report. The academy does not accept TOEFL MyBest Scores, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online, or IELTS One Skill Retake.
Mainland Chinese applicants follow a different Ministry of Education process and, in many cases, must still be enrolled as undergraduates at a mainland university. Always check the current admissions page if that is your category.
Six Research Areas and the Degree You Earn
Scholars build a course plan with mentors across six areas:

- Law and Society
- Economics and Management
- History and Archaeology

The diploma is a Peking University master’s in China Studies. The exact title follows the research area, for example Master of Law in China Studies (Politics and International Relations) or Master of Economics in China Studies (Economics and Management).
Compulsory elements typically include a China Studies lecture series, China in Transition, a field study trip, and academic writing. International scholars take Chinese language unless they place out. Graduation requires the credit load set for your category plus a passed thesis.

How to Apply for the 2027 Cohort
Applications for international and HMT candidates opened on 1 September 2026. The official deadline is 30 November 2026 at 9:00 am Beijing time.
Apply through the Yenching Academy portal. Materials are submitted in English and usually include:
- Completed online application form
- Personal statement (750 words or fewer)
- Statement of research interest (up to 1,500 words, excluding citations)
- Curriculum vitae
- Official transcript(s)
- Diploma or certificate of enrollment
- Two academic recommendation letters from associate professors, full professors, or equivalent, ideally in your intended field
HMT applicants also complete a supplementary application on the Peking University Graduate Admissions site and, in some cycles, mail hard copies. Missing that second application makes the file incomplete.
If you are a student or alumnus of a Partner University, you must go through your university’s internal pre-selection first, then submit to Yenching. Cooperating universities usually apply directly. When in doubt, write to yca-admissions@pku.edu.cn before you assume you can skip campus nomination.
International finalists are typically interviewed online in winter or early spring. Offers follow Peking University’s internal procedures, with official letters closer to summer.
How Strong Applications Actually Look
The selection rate is low. Public estimates have put recent acceptance near 2.7 percent. Prestige of your undergraduate brand helps less than a coherent story.
Use the personal statement to answer three questions without padding: who you are, why an interdisciplinary China Studies master’s is the next honest step, and what you will do with the degree after Beijing. The research statement is not a binding thesis contract. - Missing a Partner University nomination deadline while watching only the 30 November date
- Sending English scores that the academy will not accept
- Applying as an international candidate without the required pre-2021 citizenship documents if you formerly held Chinese nationality
- Assuming a prior master’s automatically helps (it does not)
- Waiting until November to ask professors for letters
Start the research statement early. Ask recommenders in October at the latest. Confirm whether your campus is a Partner University before you draft anything.
Should You Apply?
Apply if you can make a precise case that two years of interdisciplinary China study at Peking University will change the work you can do. Do not apply only because the package is fully funded. Fully funded programs still reject applicants who cannot explain the fit.
