A first-class bachelor’s degree from an African university is not always enough to open a top European graduate school. Tuition, visas, flights, and two years of living costs usually close the door. The Wageningen University Africa Scholarship Programme (ASP) is one of the few awards that tries to keep that door open on purpose.
The programme is invitation-only. There is no separate scholarship form. You apply for a master’s degree at Wageningen University & Research (WUR), meet a strict academic and document deadline of 1 December 2026, and wait to see whether the university invites you into the ASP selection. Offers for the September 2027 intake are scheduled for 7 April 2027.

What the Africa Scholarship Programme Is Designed to Do
WUR describes the ASP as a route for talented, motivated students from Africa to complete a master’s degree in Wageningen and to support capacity building on the continent. That second phrase matters. The university is not only recruiting high GPAs. It is selecting people it believes will take advanced training in food systems, agriculture, environment, water, climate, and related fields back into African institutions, research groups, and public service.
The award is for the September start only. Current WUR students cannot apply. You must be a prospective student who has not yet begun the programme.

A funded place at a number-one subject university is rare. That is the real story of this scholarship, not only the monthly stipend.
What the Scholarship Actually Pays
The ASP is structured as a full-cost package for a standard two-year master’s degree.
- Travel to and from the Netherlands
- Living allowance for the duration of the programme (24 months)
- Tuition fee coverage for the duration of the programme (24 months)
- Visa costs and costs for health insurance
WUR does not publish a public euro figure for the living allowance in the programme summary you should treat as official. Plan using current Dutch student cost-of-living guidance and confirm details only if you receive an offer. Do not budget as if the award is a partial tuition waiver. If selected, tuition for 24 months is covered and the living allowance is intended to support you for the same period.
The package does not automatically include family members, a second master’s, or a later PhD. Preference is given to applicants who have not already obtained a master’s degree.

Who Can Be Invited
You are only in the pool if every item below is true.
- You are a citizen of an African country.
- You have submitted a complete application for one of the MSc programmes at Wageningen University & Research before 1 December 2026. See WUR’s guide: How can I apply for the master’s programme?
- You are unconditionally admitted to that MSc programme.
- You are an excellent student with a First Class honours degree and a GPA of 80% or higher in a bachelor’s degree.
- Preference is given to students who have not obtained a master’s degree yet.
A complete master’s application is not a draft portal file. WUR is explicit about two items that knock otherwise strong candidates out of the scholarship assessment:
- Official English language test results must be available and uploaded before 1 December 2026. Booking a test in November is usually too late. Results can take weeks.
- You must have completed your bachelor’s degree before 1 December 2026 and uploaded the diploma as part of the complete application by that date.
Conditional admission based on a pending diploma or a pending language score may be enough for a later master’s start in some cases. It is not enough for ASP consideration in this cycle. Only applicants who meet all stated requirements could be eligible for an invitation to the selection procedure.
Check current accepted tests and scores on WUR’s English language proficiency (MSc) page. Typical accepted routes include IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT at the university’s published minima. Some online or home editions are not accepted. Confirm the exact list before you pay for a test.

You Cannot Apply for the Scholarship Directly
This is the detail most late applicants miss.
The WU Scholarship Selection Committee coordinates the ASP. You apply for the master’s programme. The committee then reviews complete files submitted before the deadline. Around March–April 2027, a number of applicants are informed by email that they have been selected for the final stage.
In the final stage, a lottery determines the scholarship recipients. On 7 April 2027, the ASP is offered to the selected students. Remaining candidates from that final group are placed on a waiting list.
That lottery is not a rumour from scholarship blogs. It is how WUR describes the last step once a shortlist exists. Academic excellence gets you into the room. It does not, by itself, guarantee the award after you are shortlisted.
If you are not contacted in the March–April window, you should assume you are no longer in consideration for that intake’s ASP. Keep checking the email address used in your master’s application, including spam folders.
Timeline You Should Treat as Fixed
- Now–November 2026: Choose an MSc programme, book an accepted English test, request transcripts and a diploma, and start the WUR application through the official process (Studielink plus the university portal).
- Before 1 December 2026: Submit a complete master’s application. Upload the bachelor’s diploma, transcripts, English results, and all other required supporting documents.
- After the deadline: WUR assesses complete files. Unconditional admission is required for scholarship consideration.
- March–April 2027: Shortlist emails for the final ASP stage.
- 7 April 2027: Scholarship offers. Others from the final group go on a waiting list.
- 1 September 2027: Typical master’s start for this funded cohort.
WUR scholarship programmes are for the September start only. Do not plan a February start around the ASP.
How to Build a File That Can Be Shortlisted
Meeting the 80% / First Class bar is the floor, not the strategy.
Choose the right programme, not the most famous title. Admission boards look for a bachelor’s field that actually prepares you for the MSc. A weak fit produces a rejection or a conditional offer that never becomes unconditional in time.
Finish the degree early enough to upload the diploma. A transcript of “expected graduation in December” is the most common self-inflicted error. The ASP rules for this cycle require the completed bachelor’s diploma in the file by 1 December 2026.
Treat English as a project, not a last errand. If your test centre needs three weeks to release scores and WUR needs the official result in the portal, working backwards from 1 December often means sitting the exam in September or October.
Write the application as if a committee will later decide whether Africa benefits from funding you. The ASP’s public purpose is capacity building. A personal statement that only lists awards is weaker than one that shows a concrete problem in your country or region and how a specific WUR chair group or MSc specialisation trains you to work on it.
Do not already hold a master’s if you can avoid it. Preference is written into the rules. A second master’s is a harder sell.
Apply once, completely. Partial uploads after the deadline are not a strategy. WUR states that only master’s applications submitted before the deadline will be assessed by the scholarship selection committee.

Other Funding If You Are Not Invited
The ASP is not the only money in the Netherlands. If your file is strong but you are not shortlisted, keep two parallel tracks open:
- Other WUR invitation awards on the same scholarships page (Excellence Programme, Anne van den Ban Fund, NL Scholarship), each with its own rules and coverage.
- National and external searches via ScholarshipPortal and Nuffic’s study-in-Holland guidance for international students.
Country-specific loan and grant agencies (for example LPDP, Colfuturo, or CSC for other nationalities) appear on WUR’s scholarships overview as external options. African applicants should still treat the ASP as the dedicated institutional award, not as a substitute for a weak academic record.
Frequently Missed Rules
Citizenship, not residence, is the first filter. You must be a citizen of an African country.
Unconditional admission is a scholarship requirement. An offer that still waits for a diploma or a language score is not enough.
The committee will not chase missing documents. If the English result or diploma is not in the complete application by 1 December 2026, you are outside the assessment.
A previous master’s reduces preference. The programme is built for a first graduate degree.
Selection is not a public ranking list. You will not see a published cut-off beyond the stated 80% / First Class threshold. After the shortlist, chance is part of the design.
What to Do This Week
If the 2027 intake is your target, the useful work is unglamorous: confirm your GPA on the scale WUR will read, book an accepted English test, request a diploma that can be uploaded before December, and shortlist two MSc programmes whose admission requirements you actually meet. Then submit one complete application early enough that a portal error is not your deadline.
The Wageningen University Africa Scholarship Programme will not fund every excellent African student who wants to study food, climate, or the living environment. It will fund a small group who were unconditionally admitted, documented on time, and then drawn in the final stage. That is a narrow window. It is also one of the few windows that covers tuition, a two-year living allowance, travel, visa costs, and insurance at a university that still leads global rankings in agriculture.
Read the official conditions on the WUR master’s scholarships page before you spend money on a language test, and treat 1 December 2026 as a hard close, not a target.
