Overview of the ETH Zurich Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP)
The Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP) is ETH Zurich’s flagship merit-based scholarship for exceptional Master’s students. Funded entirely by donations to the ETH Foundation, it supports outstanding young talent from Switzerland and across the globe.
Unlike many partial scholarships, ESOP is designed to cover the full cost of study and living expenses. Recipients also receive mentorship and join an exclusive network of scholars and ETH Foundation supporters. The goal is simple yet powerful: enable the brightest students to concentrate fully on their studies and research without financial stress, while building connections that last a lifetime.
Each year the programme aims to award 50–60 scholarships. Selection is highly competitive, but the reward is transformative.

Why the ESOP Scholarship Stands Out
Complete financial coverage. The scholarship includes:
- A tuition fee waiver for the entire standard duration of your Master’s programme.
- CHF 12,000 per semester (approximately CHF 24,000 per year) to cover living and study expenses.
This is particularly valuable following recent changes to ETH Zurich tuition fees for new international students. The stipend is paid in instalments at the beginning of each semester directly into a Swiss bank or post office account.
Duration Support lasts for the regular duration of your chosen Master’s programme — typically three or four semesters (1.5–2 years).
Beyond money: mentorship and network ESOP scholars gain access to mentorship and the ETH Foundation’s network of influential alumni, donors, and leaders in science, business, and society. Many former scholars remain in Switzerland after graduation, contributing to the country’s innovation ecosystem while building impressive careers.

How to Apply for the ETH Zurich Excellence Scholarship 2027
The ESOP application is integrated into the regular Master’s application process. There is no separate scholarship form.
Step-by-step process:
- Choose your Master’s programme(s): Explore ETH Zurich’s wide range of English-taught Master’s programmes in engineering, natural sciences, architecture, management, and more.
- Prepare your documents In addition to standard admission documents (transcripts, CV, diplomas, language certificates, etc.), ESOP applicants must upload a pre-proposal for the Master’s thesis. Follow the official guidelines carefully. Plagiarism or misinformation leads to disqualification.
- Submit via eApply during the correct window: Applications open 1 November 2026 and close 30 November 2026 at 11:59 MEZ (CET) for programmes starting in Autumn Semester 2027 (HS27). This is the only window for most international applicants. Apply early — the portal can get busy.
- Additional ESOP requirements: If your chosen programme does not require references for admission, you will need to provide details of two reference persons for the scholarship consideration.
Official application portal: eApply (ETH Zurich online application system).
Important note: You can apply for multiple Master’s programmes, but each requires a separate application and pre-proposal.
Selection Process and Timeline
ETH Zurich evaluates candidates primarily on academic excellence. Shortlisted applicants may be invited for a phone or video interview (often in February). Be sure the phone number on your CV is current and you are reachable.
Results are typically communicated in the following months. Successful scholars receive both admission to their Master’s programme and the ESOP award.
Proven Tips to Strengthen Your ESOP Application
- Demonstrate genuine research fit — Your pre-proposal should align with ongoing work at ETH Zurich. Show you have researched potential supervisors and labs.
- Highlight academic excellence clearly — Quantify your ranking or GPA and provide context (e.g., “Top 5% of 200 students”).
- Craft a compelling narrative — While the pre-proposal is key, your overall application should show intellectual curiosity, resilience, and clear career goals.
- Prepare for possible interview — Be ready to discuss your research interests, motivation for ETH Zurich, and how the scholarship will help you contribute to your field.
- Start early — Strong applications take time. Begin preparing documents and refining your research idea months in advance.
Life as an ESOP Scholar at ETH Zurich

Many scholars describe the experience as life-changing — not just because of the funding, but because of the freedom to pursue ambitious research and the connections formed within the ESOP community.
