• Candidates must meet the minimum criteria for admission to a PhD or Master’s program at Stellenbosch University.
• The scholarships are open to South African citizens and African foreign nationals.
• As mentioned earlier, preference will be given to previously disadvantaged South African and African foreign national citizens.

When applying for the AGCAE Scholarships, it’s essential to compile the necessary supporting documents:

• Academic records: Include full particulars of ALL previous and current tertiary studies. Ensure that you submit copies of certified diploma/degree certificates AND official study records (transcripts). Note that academic records from student portals will not be accepted.
• ID or passport: Attach a certified copy of your ID (South African) or passport (international) photo page.
• Proof of competency in English: If your qualifications weren’t obtained from tertiary institutions where English is the language of instruction, you must provide proof of English Language proficiency. This evidence must accompany your application and should not be older than 24 months from the date of application.

It’s imperative to submit your completed application forms and supporting documents via email to GEM@sun.ac.za by 23h59 on that date. Late applications will not be accepted, so be sure to adhere to this deadline.

Method of Application

Now that you’re equipped with all the necessary information and documents, follow these steps to complete your application for the 2024 cohort of the AGCAE:

1. Ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria before you submit an application.
2. Download and complete either the PhD Application Form or the Master’s Application Form. These forms are essential for providing the required information.
3. As part of your application, you will need to write a letter motivating your suitability for the scholarship (maximum length: one A4 page) and a research concept note (no maximum length) outlining the research topic you intend to pursue during your doctoral studies. Ensure these are completed on the application form in the relevant sections. Refer to the 2023 AGCAE Research Themes to guide you in selecting a research topic.
4. Compile the supporting documents outlined earlier, including academic records, ID or passport copy, and proof of English competency.
5. Submit your completed and signed application forms along with the supporting documents via email to GEM@sun.ac.za before the application deadline. Additionally, inform your three references that their referee letters, stating your capability to complete doctoral or master’s studies, should be sent directly to the Graduate School via the same email address on or before the application deadline.

Remember that incomplete applications will not be considered, so double-check that you’ve provided all the required information and documents.
