Oil and Gas Apprentice Program (OGTAP) 2024
The Oil and Gas Technical Apprentice Programme (OGTAP) is managed by OPITO, the safety and skills organisation for the energy industry, and the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB). The programme is supported and sponsored by a number of operators and contractor companies. OGTAP is a prominent Energy Apprenticeship Programme that places a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusivity. It actively encourages applicants from all backgrounds, irrespective of prior experience. OGTAP’s mission is to foster a diverse and inclusive work environment that welcomes individuals of all genders and ethnic backgrounds. Training
The Oil and Gas Technical Apprentice Programme is split into two stages. As an apprentice, you will spend time at college and the worksite with a sponsoring company, where you will receive expert on-the-job training.
1. You will attend one of our appointed colleges for 21 months, where the following qualifications will be attained:
- SVQ Level 2 (Performing Engineering Operation)
- National Certificate (multi discipline)
- Higher National Certificate (discipline specific)
- Process Operations Hydrocarbons Level 1
2. Following successful completion of the college phase, you will be mentored alongside experienced staff, gaining industry specific skills as well as an SVQ Level 3 in your discipline.
Selection Process
- OPITO manage the programme on behalf of the operators – these are companies who own installations and produce oil and gas.
- ECITB manage the programme on behalf of the contracting companies – these are companies who provide a service to the operators including the supply of maintenance technicians to work at an operator’s offshore installation or onshore site.
- Through a random selection process, apprentices will either be employed by OPITO or by one of the ECITB contractors.
- You will be supported by OPITO or ECITB throughout your training and will be appointed a mentor to help you.

Apprenticeships
The Oil and Gas Technical Apprentice Programme is offered in four key disciplines:
- Electrical Maintenance
- Mechanical Maintenance
- Process Operations
- Instrumentation and Control Maintenance.
Salary
Being an Oil and Gas Technical Apprentice allows you to earn while you learn.
An apprentice salary increases and varies as you go through your training. Whilst in college you will be paid in line with government national minimum wages for apprenticeships, which is age regulated.
- Year 1 £9,610
- Year 2 £13,632
- Year 3 £19,838
- Year 4 £22,338
However if you are placed offshore you will also recieve a non-benefit bearing allowance of £4,780.
