Who Can Apply for 5 Strong Scholarship Foundation
Eligibility is narrow on purpose. If you do not meet the geography rule, do not force an application. The organization has said out-of-area files are deleted.
You should apply only if all of the following are true:
- You are a current-year graduating high school senior.
- You live in the Atlanta metropolitan area (Fulton County and surrounding counties) or the Houston metropolitan area.
- You have at least a 3.0 GPA. Some partner HBCUs require higher.
- You have a minimum ACT of 19 or a combined SAT of 990 (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing plus Math). Some partners set a higher bar; a few have been listed with different or no test rules.

Georgia HOPE rules have applied to some Georgia partner campuses, including Fort Valley State in recent Atlanta instructions. School-specific floors have been published for campuses such as Benedict College (higher GPA), Texas Southern University (higher GPA for full tuition), Langston University, Lincoln University, Alabama State, and others. On cost: treat tuition coverage as the headline and verify the rest. If room and board are not included, file the FAFSA early at studentaid.gov, apply to campus aid, and add private awards. Recent cycles have opened around August 1 and closed December 31. Directories for 2026 list December 31, 2026, with at least one database showing December 1. Use the foundation’s own pages as the source of truth.
A typical path looks like this:
- Confirm you meet GPA, test, residency, and partner-school interest rules.
- Research two or three partner HBCUs and apply to those campuses as well. 5 Strong has told applicants to apply directly to the schools they want.
