Fully Funded PhD in Aquaculture Economics and Seafood Marketing

Americans eat a lot of seafood. A large share of it still comes from somewhere else.

NOAA Fisheries estimates that between 75% and 90% of the seafood consumed in the United States is imported. Farmed seafood imports alone run in the tens of billions of dollars a year, while domestic aquaculture production remains far smaller. That gap is not only a trade statistic. It is a research problem: who actually wants U.S. farm-raised fish and shellfish, what information shapes that choice at the grocery counter, and how producers can market domestic product without guessing.

Texas A&M University is recruiting one Ph.D. student to work on exactly that question. A graduate assistantship in aquaculture economics and seafood marketing is open for Spring 2027 under Dr. Shraddha Hegde in the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management. The package includes a $24,000 annual stipend, full tuition support, and three years of funding.

If you have a thesis-based master’s degree, enjoy consumer data more than most people, and want a doctorate that sits at the intersection of food markets and U.S. aquaculture, this is a rare, tightly defined opening. Official details are on the Natural Resources Job Board posting.

Why this Project Exists

U.S. aquaculture is not a single industry. Catfish in the South, shrimp and redfish in Texas, oysters on multiple coasts, bait and sport fish, and a growing set of other species all compete for shelf space against cheaper or better-known imported products. Production science has advanced. Market intelligence has not always kept pace.

In 2024, Texas A&M AgriLife Research helped launch a NOAA Sea Grant–supported Aquaculture Economics and Markets Collaborative, a national effort to close economic and marketing gaps for U.S. producers. Dr. Hegde, an assistant professor and ACES Faculty Fellow, is a co-principal investigator on that work. The Ph.D. assistantship is built around the consumer side of the same problem: preferences, segments, information sources, values, and retail decisions for domestic farm-raised seafood.

That is not abstract theory. Producers need to know which buyers already lean toward U.S. farmed product, which messages move the rest, and which retail settings waste advertising dollars. The student on this assistantship will help generate that evidence.

What the Ph.D. Student will Actually Do

The degree is a Ph.D. in Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, with a research focus in aquaculture economics and seafood marketing. The core project examines U.S. consumer preferences and purchasing behavior for domestic farm-raised seafood.

Expected work includes:

  • Designing and fielding survey research
  • Segmenting consumers who already prefer domestic farm-raised seafood
  • Analyzing information sources, values, and in-store decision-making
  • Running quantitative and econometric analysis
  • Preparing manuscripts and presenting at conferences
  • Translating results into marketing guidance for U.S. aquaculture producers

You will not be collecting water-quality samples. You will be collecting and modeling human choices. That makes the position a strong fit for agricultural economists, applied economists, and marketing researchers who want a fisheries or aquaculture application, and for fisheries or aquaculture graduates who already work comfortably with data.

Dr. Hegde’s own research covers aquaculture economics, natural resource economics, economic impact analysis, and aquaculture regulations. She has published widely on the U.S. catfish industry, including production economics, regulation costs, and industry contribution studies, and received the International Association of Aquaculture Economics and Management award for best Ph.D. dissertation in 2021. Her faculty profile is here.

Funding: What “Fully Funded” Means in this Case

The assistantship is a working appointment, not an unstructured scholarship.

  • Annual stipend: up to $24,000
  • Full tuition support
  • Duration: three years of funding
  • Work expectation: at least 20 hours per week
  • Health insurance: available according to Texas A&M policy
  • Teaching: you may serve as a Teaching Assistant for one to two semesters
  • Start: after January 4, 2027 (Spring 2027)

Three years of tuition plus stipend is a serious package for a consumer-marketing doctorate in this field. It does not automatically cover a fourth or fifth year; plan your dissertation timeline with that in mind and ask Dr. Hegde about later-year support if you advance to campus visit or offer stage.

College Station is a classic U.S. land-grant campus town. Cost of living is lower than on many coastal research campuses, which stretches a $24,000 stipend further than the same number would in Boston or the Bay Area. Confirm current insurance rules and fee details on the Texas A&M Graduate and Professional School site if you are comparing offers.

Who Should Apply for Fully Funded PhD in Aquaculture Economics

Minimum requirements listed in the posting:

  • A thesis-based master’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Applied Economics, Marketing, Fisheries/Aquaculture, or a closely related field
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Research experience
  • Clear interest in quantitative analysis, consumer research, and seafood or aquaculture marketing
  • Knowledge of the U.S. aquaculture industry is preferred, not required

Preferred background:

  • Econometrics
  • Agricultural or food marketing
  • Seafood or aquaculture research
  • Academic writing
  • Conference presentations

The lab is looking for people who are curious, proactive, and willing to learn. That line is not filler. Consumer surveys fail when the instrument is sloppy. Econometric results fail when the identification strategy is lazy. A student who waits to be told every next step will struggle here.

International applicants are not excluded in the job announcement. Texas A&M regularly funds international graduate assistants, but you must still satisfy university admission rules, including English proficiency where required, and obtain a visa in time for a January 2027 start. Department graduate admissions guidance explains the usual path: identify a faculty advisor first, then apply through GraduateCAS. For this assistantship, email Dr. Hegde before you spend money on the university application.

How to Apply for Fully Funded PhD in Aquaculture Economics (and How not to Waste the Email)

Send one email to Dr. Shraddha Hegde at shraddha@tamu.edu with this exact subject line:

Spring 2027 Ph.D. Assistantship, Seafood Marketing

Attach or include:

  1. CV or resume
  2. Cover letter describing your research background, master’s thesis, research interests, and interest in this Ph.D. opportunity, written in your own original voice
  3. Unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts
  4. Names and contact information for three references

Review starts immediately. Applications received by October 1, 2026 get priority. The final deadline is October 10, 2026. The job board lists October 2, 2026 as the posted closing date; treat October 1 as the date that matters for first-round attention and October 10 as the last safe day.

A few practical notes that separate strong files from generic ones:

  • The posting asks for an original voice. Do not paste a ChatGPT letter that could apply to any aquaculture lab in the country.
  • Summarize your master’s thesis in one tight paragraph: question, method, result, what you still cannot answer.
  • Show that you understand the difference between production aquaculture and seafood marketing. This project is the second.
  • If you have used discrete choice experiments, latent class models, scanner data, or survey experiments, say so in plain language and name the software.
  • Name three references who can speak to research, not only coursework.

After an advisor signals interest, you still complete the official Texas A&M graduate application. Program information lives on the RWFM Ph.D. page and the Graduate and Professional School program listing.

Is This The Right Ph.D. for You?

Choose this assistantship if you want a doctorate that produces papers producers and retailers can use, not only a dissertation that sits in a repository. The training mix—surveys, econometrics, writing, and conferences—is the standard path into academic jobs in agricultural economics and applied marketing, and into analyst roles at agencies, industry groups, and seafood companies.

Skip it if your real interest is hatchery science, fish health, or genetics. Those are important fields. They are not this job.

The United States will keep importing seafood for years. The open question is whether domestic farm-raised product can win a larger, better-defined share of the consumers who already say they care about origin, safety, and production method. Someone has to measure that demand instead of assuming it. This assistantship pays you to be that person.

Email Dr. Hegde with a focused packet before the October 1, 2026 priority date. The official listing is here: https://jobs.rwfm.tamu.edu/view-job/?id=118887.
