If you are an academically strong young African leader who cannot fund a master’s degree on your own, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC is one of the most complete opportunities available in Canada. It is not a partial fee discount. Selected scholars receive a full package: tuition, housing, living costs, travel, health cover, and structured support designed to turn a degree into leadership back home.

The window for the Winter 2027 intake is unusually short. Applications opened on 31 August 2026. The Expression of Interest closes on 6 September 2026. Anyone who waits for a later “main deadline” will miss the first gate.

This guide explains what the program is, who it is for, what it pays for, which degrees qualify, and how to apply without wasting a scarce chance.

Scholarship Summary

  • Host Country: Canada

Overview of Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC

The University of British Columbia partners with the Mastercard Foundation to educate young Africans who will drive inclusive economic and social change on the continent. After supporting more than 171 scholars in its first phase, UBC’s next decade of the partnership (2024–2034) is designed to support 351 graduate students in a focused set of professional master’s programs.

The global Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has already enabled tens of thousands of young Africans to pursue secondary and tertiary education. UBC’s slice of that network is deliberately narrow: forestry, food systems, land and water, and data science. Those fields match Africa’s needs in climate resilience, food security, natural resource management, and the data skills that now sit behind almost every development problem..

Why This Scholarship Is Different From Ordinary Funding

Many awards cover tuition and stop there. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC is built as a leadership pathway, not a cheque.

Scholars receive tailored wrap-around support so they can actually complete a demanding Canadian master’s program: orientation (including programs such as GradStart), wellbeing and personal development programming, a dedicated program office, academic success services, and career support. The intent is access plus thrive, especially for women, refugees, internally displaced people, and persons with disabilities.

After graduation, the expectation is not that scholars disappear into a Canadian labour market. The design is that they return skills, networks, and enterprises to African communities. Enterprising scholars can also tap a Social Entrepreneurship Fund to start a venture on the continent.

That “give back” criterion is not decorative. Selection committees look for it in every statement and reference.

What the UBC Mastercard Foundation Scholarship 2027 Covers

Successful scholars typically receive:

  • Tuition and books
  • Flights and immigration support
  • Room and board
  • Stipends for living expenses
  • Health insurance
  • Career services and professional support
  • Access to the global Mastercard Foundation alumni network
  • Social Entrepreneurship Fund for scholars who want to launch a venture in Africa

Faculty application fees can be a hidden barrier. Applicants whose citizenship and correspondence address are in one of the United Nations’ least developed countries may qualify for a fee waiver. If your country is not on that list, you can still request a waiver when you submit the Mastercard Foundation application package. Instructions come later if you are invited to the faculty application stage. Do not pay first and hope for a refund.

Eligible Master’s Programs Only

The scholarship is restricted. You cannot pick any UBC master’s program.

Faculty of Forestry

Faculty of Land and Food Systems

  • Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE)
  • Master of Food Science (MFS)

Faculty of Science

The thematic spine is forestry, agriculture, and land and water management as engines of sustainable entrepreneurship and community-led development. Data science sits beside those fields because modern resource and food systems run on data.

Program lists can shift between intakes. Confirm the live list on the official apply page before you write a single paragraph of your statement.

  1. Choose one or more eligible programs and check that your bachelor’s credentials meet UBC’s country-specific minimums.

    • Two reference letters on official letterhead, attached in the form (do not email them separately unless instructed)
    • Transcripts

  5. Attend an interview if invited.

How Selection Actually Works

UBC states that selection rests on:

  • Academic merit sufficient for admission to the chosen program
  • A track record as a transformative leader and service in your community
  • Quality of the application in relation to the program theme
  • Potential impact on development in your home country

A high GPA with a generic “I want to study in Canada” essay is weak. A slightly less perfect transcript paired with specific community work, a clear problem you intend to tackle in forestry, food systems, or data, and referees who can describe your leadership is stronger.

Write as if the reader has never heard of your town, NGO, farm, or lab. Name the problem, your role, the result, and what you will do with a UBC degree when you return.

Practical Advice That Improves Your Odds

  • Start English testing now if your bachelor’s degree was not taught in English. Score reports take time.
  • Ask referees early and give them the program theme: leadership, community impact, and return to Africa.
  • Align your CV with one eligible program. A food scientist applying to Master of Data Science needs a coherent story, not a list of unrelated jobs.
  • Keep statements short and specific. The official instructions ask you to answer each question succinctly.
  • Do not apply to programs outside the list.
  • Watch only official channels. Scholarship aggregator sites often recycle last year’s deadlines and program lists.

Meet current scholars and read impact stories on the program site’s current scholars and blog sections. Those profiles show the kind of trajectory the partnership wants to fund.

Is UBC Worth the Effort?

UBC is a major research university in Vancouver, consistently ranked among the world’s leading institutions, with unusual strength in forestry, sustainability, and applied environmental science. For an African professional who wants credentials that employers and ministries recognize, plus a cohort of peers committed to the same continent-facing mission, that combination is rare.

The cost of a Canadian master’s without funding is prohibitive for most of the students this program is built to serve. That is the point of the partnership.

Final Check Before You Apply

Confirm four things on the official pages today: you fit the age and degree rules, your target program is still listed, you can submit an Expression of Interest by 6 September 2026, and you can obtain transcripts and two letterhead references in time for Round 1 if invited.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC rewards people who already lead in imperfect conditions and can explain, without slogans, how a year or two at UBC will change what they can do at home. If that is your story, the next seven days matter more than the next seven months.
