If you finished a PhD or a health professional degree and you are hunting for serious, portable research funding, the Canada Postdoctoral Research Award is the federal award you need to understand first.
It is not a university scholarship. It is not a teaching contract. It is a two-year, $70,000-per-year research award run jointly by CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC under the Canada Research Training Awards Suite (CRTAS). It replaced the old agency-by-agency postdoctoral fellowships and the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship.
For the 2026 competition, the money is the same across all three agencies. The deadlines are not. That single fact is why strong applications miss the window every year.
Summary
- Host Country: Canada (eligible Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons who earned their degree in Canada may hold the award at an eligible institution outside Canada)
- Host University: Any eligible host with a research training mandate (universities, research hospitals, colleges, provincial research institutes, NGOs and Indigenous organizations). The award cannot be held at a Canadian federal government research institution.
- Scholarship Type: Postdoctoral Research Award
- Eligible Countries: Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and protected persons. International applicants may apply only if, by the deadline, they are enrolled in or have completed a doctorate or health professional degree at a Canadian institution, or are already doing postdoctoral research at a Canadian institution. Up to 20% of awards go to international applicants.
- Scholarship Benefits: $70,000 CAD per year for 24 months (total $140,000). This is a training stipend, not a tuition waiver. Additional targeted awards and supplements exist for meritorious Indigenous and Black scholars, plus SSHRC-linked supplements in some years.
What the CPRA actually funds
The program’s official purpose is to support outstanding early-career researchers while they build independent research skills and move toward the next stage of a research career. That next stage can be a faculty job, a research scientist role, a policy or industry research path, or another postdoc with a clearer independent program.
The award is discipline-blind in structure. You apply to the agency that matches your proposed research:

- CIHR for health research (biomedical, clinical, health services, and population health)
- NSERC for natural sciences and engineering
- SSHRC for social sciences and humanities
Interdisciplinary work is allowed. What is not allowed is shopping the same idea to two agencies in the same year. You may submit only one CRTAS application per academic year, and you may apply to the CPRA a maximum of three times in your career.
Why $70,000 for two years matters
$70,000 a year for 24 months is $140,000 of stipend support. In practical terms, that usually means:
- a living stipend that is competitive with many Canadian institutional postdoc salaries
- two years of protected research time (you must spend at least 75% of your time on the proposed research training)
- the ability, in many cases, to choose your host lab rather than waiting for a supervisor’s grant line to open
- a credential that hiring committees recognize because it is nationally peer-reviewed
It is not a tuition scholarship. Postdocs are not paying program fees the way master’s or PhD students do. Treat the award as salary-equivalent research support, not as a fee waiver.
CIHR’s 2026–2027 competition alone has about $32.76 million available, enough for roughly 234 awards, plus extra designated awards for meritorious Black scholars. The other two agencies run parallel competitions. Budget 2024 also added capacity for meritorious applications in priority areas such as AI and quantum, biotechnology, clean technology, climate and the Arctic, food and water security, democratic resilience, advanced materials, and defence and dual-use technologies.
Who can apply
You must:
- hold, or expect to hold, a doctoral or health professional degree before the award start date
- not hold, and not be on leave from, a tenure-track or tenured faculty position
- have completed all degree requirements no more than three years before September 1 of the year you apply
“Completed all requirements” means defence plus submission of the corrected thesis, not convocation day. If you hold more than one relevant doctorate or health professional degree, the clock starts from the most recent one.
Eligibility window extensions
You can get up to three extra years if you meet one or more of these conditions:
- career interruption (parental, medical, family responsibilities, mandatory military service, war, civil conflict, natural disaster, or limited research opportunity for socio-economic reasons)
- at least six months of full-time relevant employment in industry or government after the degree (academic labs and affiliated hospitals do not count for this extension)
- becoming a primary caregiver after birth or adoption within three years before or after degree completion (this one adds three years)
- non-research clinical training such as residency after the degree
Document interruptions in the Common CV. Reviewers will not guess.
International applicants
If you are not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person on the deadline date, you must already have a Canadian connection:
- currently registered in a doctoral or health professional program at a Canadian institution, or
- already completed that degree at a Canadian institution, or
- currently conducting postdoctoral research at a Canadian institution
International award holders may hold the CPRA only in Canada. Up to 20% of awards are reserved for this group.
Canadians who want to go abroad
Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons who completed their doctorate or health professional degree at a Canadian institution may propose an eligible host outside Canada. About 30% of awards can be held abroad. International hosts still need a significant research training mandate. Plan research security and travel early if that is your path.
Who is excluded
You are out of contention if you:
- already received a CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC postdoctoral-level award, including a Banting Fellowship
- hold or are on leave from a tenure-track or tenured post
- want the money to finish a degree, an internship, a language course, a textbook, or a lightly revised version of your thesis
- apply to more than one CRTAS program in the same year
The proposed program must be predominantly research and must go clearly beyond the doctoral thesis.
How applications are judged
The scoring split is simple and unforgiving:
- Research potential and experience: 50%
- Quality of the proposed research program: 50%
That means a glittering CV with a vague project loses to a strong CV plus a tight, feasible, well-supervised two-year plan. Reviewers look at publications in context of field and career stage, awards, independence, the training environment, and whether the project will actually change what you can do next. CIHR assigns applications to multidisciplinary committees covering biomedical/clinical work or health services and population health. NSERC and SSHRC use their own expert review structures.
DORA principles apply. Raw journal prestige is not supposed to be a proxy for quality. Still, evidence of impact, originality and readiness for independence matters.

How to apply without missing a hidden deadline
There is no single portal for all three agencies.
- Decide the correct agency using the Tri-agency subject matter guide.
- Read the current program page: NSERC CPRA program overview (harmonized description used across agencies).
- Apply in the right system:
- CIHR: ResearchNet
- NSERC: NSERC online system
- SSHRC: SSHRC application system, plus the institutional nomination and commitment form
- Confirm your host institution’s internal deadline. CIHR and SSHRC often require institutional signatures earlier than the agency date. University of Toronto’s 2026 CIHR internal deadline, for example, is September 7. NSERC usually does not require an institutional signature.
- Line up referees and the proposed supervisor early. Late letters kill otherwise complete files.
- Submit only through the agency platform. Late applications are not accepted. After the deadline you generally cannot update the scientific content.
Official starting points:
- SSHRC CPRA page
- CIHR CPRA FAQ
- U of T CPRA guidance (useful even if you are applying from another university)
Application Deadline (2026):
- SSHRC: September 10, 2026, 8:00 p.m. Eastern
- CIHR: September 16, 2026
- NSERC: October 17, 2026
Results are typically released by March 31 of the following year.
How to write a competitive file
Treat the research proposal as a two-year independence plan, not a third chapter of the thesis.
- State a question that is distinct from your doctorate.
- Show why this supervisor and this site are the right next environment. If you stay in the same lab, justify it (specialized infrastructure, community-based work, family or health constraints). Reviewers accept justified continuity; they punish inertia.
- Make methods, timeline, risk and milestones concrete enough for a generalist committee.
- Connect the two years to a credible next role.
- If your work aligns with a Budget 2024 priority area, say so only if it is true. Forced alignment is easy to spot.
- Use the Common CV interruptions section if the three-year window is tight.
SSHRC applicants should also check associated supplements, including the Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot and other joint initiatives listed on the SSHRC CPRA page.
After you win
Notification is expected by March 31. CIHR recipients typically have 15 business days to accept or decline an offer. Funding start dates are often April 1 of the following year, with some flexibility and possible retroactive payment once eligibility is confirmed.
Award holders must follow the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide. You remain a trainee. You cannot convert the award into a hidden faculty appointment. Part-time tenure is possible in defined cases. Name and basic award details are published.
International researchers holding the award in Canada will usually need an employer-specific work permit as a postdoctoral fellow or research award recipient. That is an immigration process, not part of the CPRA review. Start it with the host institution’s international office as soon as the offer is in hand.
A realistic timeline if you are applying this cycle
Today is 1 September 2026. SSHRC closes in nine days. CIHR closes in a little over two weeks. NSERC still has until mid-October.
If your file is not already in draft with referee commitments, SSHRC 2026 is probably gone. CIHR is only realistic if the proposal, CCV and institutional signatures are nearly done. NSERC applicants still have time to tighten the project and the training plan.
If you are targeting 2027 instead, use the next twelve months to produce the outputs that actually move the 50% “potential and experience” score: first-author papers, a clearer independent question, and a supervisor who will write a specific appraisal rather than a generic letter.
The Canada Postdoctoral Research Award is now the main federal postdoc award in the country. The stipend is public. The criteria are public. The deadlines are public. What separates funded files from the rest is usually not a secret supplement. It is a project that looks like the start of a research career rather than the end of a dissertation.
