Most funded PhD openings ask you to join a project that is already locked in. This one does something rarer. Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi is recruiting a doctoral student to help decide what oyster reef restoration and harvest management actually do for reef condition in Texas—and then to own original dissertation questions inside that work.
The position is based at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies (HRI) and starts in Summer or Fall 2027. It includes a graduate research assistantship, tuition, required fees, and health insurance. If you care about coastal habitats that filter water, buffer storms, and feed fisheries, this is one of the more concrete fully funded PhD in marine biology USA 2027 openings now on the table.

Why This PhD Matters Now
Oyster reefs are among the most reduced marine habitats on Earth. Global assessments put historic loss near 85–90 percent. Texas is not an exception. Overharvest, freshwater pulses, disease, and degraded water quality have thinned reefs that once structured entire bays.
That loss is not only a seafood story. A living reef:
- Filters large volumes of water and cycles nutrients
- Builds three-dimensional habitat for fish, crabs, and other invertebrates
- Dampens wave energy and can reduce shoreline erosion
- Supports commercial harvest and coastal recreation
Restoration has become the standard policy response. The scientific question is harder: when managers rebuild a reef or change harvest rules, which metrics actually move—oyster density, size structure, mortality, shell budget, or the animals that use the reef? This project is built to answer that in Texas waters, with field comparison of natural, restored, and actively managed reefs.

The work sits inside a lab that already built a public restoration pipeline. HRI’s Coastal Conservation and Restoration group, led by Dr. Jennifer Beseres Pollack, co-founded Sink Your Shucks, which has returned millions of pounds of recycled oyster shell to Texas bays and helped rebuild tens of acres of reef. The new student will not be starting from a blank map.

What You Will Study
The student joins a newly funded, multi-year project run with resource managers and research partners. The core design is comparative. You will measure how restoration and management change:
- Oyster populations and reef dynamics
- Relationships between reef structure and ecological function
- Effects of restoration and harvest management
- Habitat support and associated macrofaunal communities
- Ecological indicators and thresholds that managers can actually use
Field methods are not optional extras. Expect quantitative diver surveys and standard dredge sampling to quantify oyster density, size structure, mortality, and live versus dead shell. You will test whether routine fishery-monitoring metrics can stand in as indicators of broader reef condition. Additional work will look at the communities living on and around the reef.
The listing is explicit that the PhD student will have room to shape dissertation questions inside this frame. That is the difference between a technician role and a doctoral project.
Substantial fieldwork will take place in Galveston Bay, while the student is based at HRI in Corpus Christi.
Funding Package
This is a true graduate research assistantship, not an unpaid “opportunity.”
- Stipend: $2,000 per month at the start
- Increase: $2,200 per month after advancement to candidacy
- Tuition and required fees covered
- Health insurance included
- Appointment: 20 hours per week
- Start window: between 15 May 2027 and 1 September 2027
At the published monthly rates, the stipend is about $24,000–$26,400 per year before the tuition and insurance package. For a coastal field PhD in the United States, that combination is competitive.
Degree Home: CMSS or Marine Biology
The successful applicant will pursue the PhD through one of two programs at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi:
- Coastal and Marine System Science (CMSS) — interdisciplinary training that links coastal processes, quantitative analysis, and systems thinking
- Marine Biology (MARB) — a marine organism and process track with a strong Gulf of Mexico field tradition
Program choice should follow your background and the questions you want to own. Both sit on a campus that treats the Gulf as a working laboratory, not a distant field site.

Who Should Apply for Fully Funded PhD in Marine Biology USA 2027
The lab is looking for research experience and a clear interest in oyster reef ecology, restoration ecology, benthic ecology, fisheries, or coastal science. An M.S. in marine science, ecology, biology, fisheries, environmental science, or a related field is preferred. It is not required if you can show substantial equivalent research experience. The minimum education listed on the job board is a bachelor’s degree.
Helpful, but not required:
- Field research, especially oyster or benthic work
- Quantitative analysis and R
- Scientific writing
- Small-boat fieldwork
- SCUBA certification or scientific diving
The tone of the call is as important as the skill list. They want students who take ownership of questions, work independently and with partners, and treat field problems as things to solve rather than reasons to stall.

How to Apply for Fully Funded PhD in Marine Biology USA 2027 (This Is Not a Portal Form)
Do not wait for a generic graduate application window and hope the lab notices you. The first screen is a direct email to the principal investigator.
Email Dr. Jennifer Beseres Pollack at jennifer.pollack@tamucc.edu with:
- A CV
- Unofficial transcripts
- A short email that explains your research background, your interests, and why this project is the right next step
Review starts immediately. Materials should arrive by 15 December 2026 for full consideration. The position stays open until filled.
A strong note is specific. Name the research directions you could actually pursue (reef structure and function, harvest effects, macrofauna, monitoring indicators). Show that you have read the lab’s restoration and ecology work, not only the stipend line.
University graduate admission to CMSS or MARB will still be required after a lab match. Start with the advisor contact listed above; that is the path the posting describes.
How to Make the Application Competitive
Treat the email as a research pitch, not a cover letter template.
- Lead with evidence of independent work: a thesis chapter, a methods skill you ran yourself, a field season you helped design.
- Be honest about diving and boat time. Preferred is not the same as required, but pretending you have hours you do not have will fail on the first survey day.
- If your quantitative background is thin, say how you will close the gap. Reef comparisons live or die on sampling design and analysis.
- Explain why Galveston Bay and Texas management questions interest you, not only why “oysters are important.”
- Keep the message short. The posting asks for a brief email. Attach the CV and transcripts and let those carry the detail.
If you are applying from outside the United States, flag your degree equivalency and English-language documentation early so the lab can judge timeline risk before the December review.
Corpus Christi as a Place to Do This Work
TAMU-CC markets itself as the Island University for a reason. The campus sits on the Texas Coastal Bend, with direct access to estuaries, passes, and the open Gulf. HRI is built around Gulf of Mexico science and policy, which means your committee, seminar audience, and management partners are already in the same building or the same bay system.
The tradeoff is real field intensity. Diver surveys, dredge days, and work in Galveston Bay will dominate seasons. That is the job. If you want a desk-only doctorate, this is the wrong listing.

Bottom Line
A fully funded PhD in marine biology USA 2027 that pairs a living stipend with tuition, fees, and insurance is already scarce. One that also gives you ownership of questions on restored versus managed oyster reefs—in a lab that has already put shell back in the water at scale—is narrower still.
If your record shows field initiative and a real interest in reef ecology, send the three items to Dr. Pollack before 15 December 2026. The start date is more than half a year away. The review is not.
