About the Bartlett Promise Sub-Saharan Africa Master’s Scholarship
This scholarship is open to applicants who are nationals and residents of a Bartlett-approved list of Sub-Saharan African countries and have admission to a Bartlett master’s program at University College London (UCL), in the UK.

Scholarship Benefits
The scholarship covers:
- The entire cost of tuition for international students.
- A yearly stipend of £16,008 will be given to cover living and educational expenses for the standard duration of the program at UCL.
- Round-trip airfare to and from the UK.
- Expenses related to obtaining a UK study visa, taking an English language assessment, and undergoing a health examination and paying the NHS Immigration Health Supplement charge.
- All Promise scholars will benefit from ongoing academic and career guidance throughout their studies.
Eligible Countries
Prospective students who are citizens of Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, the Republic of Congo, Cote D’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are eligible for the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria
The objective of The Bartlett Promise is to facilitate postgraduate studies for students from underrepresented backgrounds in The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment. To qualify for the Sub-Saharan African scholarship under The Bartlett Promise, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a national of one of The Bartlett’s approved list 2 of Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries and resident in an eligible SSA country.
- Must not hold British or dual British citizenship.
- Have an offer of admission to a Bartlett Master’s program for study in 2023 or 2024 that is either unconditional or conditional only on English language
- Be in financial need as assessed by UCL 3.
In addition to these, candidates should ideally also meet at least one of the additional criteria:
- Be a forced migrant
- Be the first generation in the family to attend university at the undergraduate level.
- Be the first generation in the family to attend university at the postgraduate level.
Selection Criteria
During the application process, we will evaluate your educational, personal, and financial situation. It is important that you provide evidence of these factors in your application. The eligibility criteria will be used to assess all applications.

- Apply for admission to a Bartlett master’s program.
- Receive an admission letter for a Bartlett master’s program.
- Apply for a Bartlett Promise Sub-Saharan Africa Scholarship.
Please note: to be eligible for The Bartlett Promise Sub-Saharan Africa Master’s Scholarship, candidates must have an offer of a place on a Bartlett master’s program. If you are planning to apply for the scholarship in 2023/24, it is recommended that you explore The Bartlett master’s programmes by department and identify the program that you would be interested in studying.
Candidates are eligible to apply for the Bartlett Promise Sub-Saharan Africa Scholarship only after they have received an offer of admission to a master’s program at The Bartlett.
