On a Masters fee in the mid-teens or low twenties (in pounds), a 50% Excellence award can save several thousand pounds in a single year. Combined awards are capped. You cannot stack discounts so that they exceed 50% of first-year fees.

Check the eligible courses list before you assume your programme qualifies. Foundation, full-time, sandwich, and many Postgraduate Diploma versions of listed Masters are included. Some professional law, teaching, social work, and distance routes are not.

If you are from one of the listed regions, look at the country prize before you assume you will only get the generic £2,000 award.

Who is eligible

You are in the running if all of the following apply:

You have an offer for an eligible full-time Bachelors or Masters at NTU
You are classed as an overseas student for tuition-fee purposes
You will enrol on the first year of a new course (or year 2 or 3 as an advanced-entry undergraduate) for the intake you are targeting
You can show strong academic results and a clear case that you will add something to campus life

You are usually not eligible if you:

Are already an NTU student on the same cycle
Have your fees paid in full or in part by an employer, government, or other sponsor
Are progressing from Nottingham Trent International College under rules that send you to a different award route
Are applying for research (PhD) funding through this taught-course form
Plan to defer to the next academic year (you must apply again)

How to apply without wasting the one form you get

NTU is explicit: one scholarship application per offer, per year. You are then assessed for every award you qualify for.

A sensible sequence looks like this:

Apply for your course and wait for an offer. Scholarship forms without an offer go nowhere.
Confirm the course sits on the eligible list.
Open the official scholarship form from the international scholarships page.
For some merit or high-achiever awards you may only need to tick a box and upload a graded transcript. For Excellence and other competitive prizes you complete the full form, including a statement of around 500 words.
Submit before the round deadline. Decisions are typically issued within five weeks.

Write the statement yourself. NTU warns against AI-generated content. Use tools only to check grammar if you must. The readers want evidence: grades, projects, leadership, work, and a specific reason NTU is the right next step, not a generic paragraph about “world-class education.”

The September 2027 international scheme opens later in the year. Earlier September 2026 rounds already used a series of mid-week deadlines from January through June. Do not rely on memory of last year’s dates.

Late forms are either held for the next round or rejected. If you need a Student visa, build extra time after the award letter for deposits, CAS, and biometrics.

What about PhD funding?

The International Scholarship Scheme is built for taught Bachelors and Masters. Doctoral funding is a different process.

NTU advertises fully funded and part-funded PhD studentships, including periodic Strategic Research Theme competitions and partnerships such as ESRC Midlands Graduate School routes. Some projects are open to international applicants; others are restricted to home-fee status. A funded studentship can include a fee arrangement and a living stipend, which the taught international scheme does not. Standard PhD application deadlines (separate from taught scholarships) have included 1 July 2026 for October 2026 starts and 1 October 2026 for January 2027 starts.

How the money hits your fees

Successful awards are loaded onto your student record and deducted from tuition after you enrol. If you pay in instalments, the discount is split across those instalments. You cannot use the scholarship as the advance payment that unlocks a CAS.

If you withdraw or change course, the award can be reviewed. Transfers inside the same school and year are sometimes allowed. Excellence awards at 50% may need course-team agreement. Ambassador or marketing requests can appear in the terms; you can usually opt out by email.

How to write a stronger application

Selection is competitive. Grades get you into the pile. The statement decides who leaves with 50% instead of £2,000.

Focus on four things:

Concrete academic evidence, not adjectives
A link between your past work and a specific NTU course or studio, lab, or industry project
Proof you will contribute on campus (societies, mentoring, research groups, sport, community work)
A budget-aware but ambitious plan for what the fee reduction makes possible

Keep the tone professional. Name modules or facilities only if you have checked they exist. Ask a teacher or manager to review the draft for clarity, not to rewrite your voice.

After you win: living costs still exist

A tuition discount is not a living stipend. Nottingham is cheaper than London, but you still need rent, food, transport, and the funds the UK visa process requires you to show. Plan housing early through NTU accommodation pages and keep a separate pot for deposits.

If the award is smaller than you hoped, look at the alumni discount (if relevant), sibling reward, external schemes, and part-time work within visa limits. Do not assume you can stack every university discount on top of GREAT or a government scholarship.
