Every year, lakhs of Indian students leave money on the table. Not because they are ineligible, but because they never reach the right form. The National Scholarship Portal exists to stop that. It is the Government of India’s single window for central and many state scholarship schemes, and for academic year 2026-27 the portal is already open.

If you study in a recognised school, college or university in India and your family income is modest, this is the page you should bookmark. Below is a practical guide to what the National Scholarship Portal is, who can apply, what you can receive, how One Time Registration works, and the dates that actually matter.

Scholarship summary

  • Host University: Recognised schools, colleges and universities across India (top-class schemes use notified institutes)

What is the National Scholarship Portal?

The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is a Mission Mode Project under the National e-Governance Plan, run with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It is designed as a one-stop system for student application, institute verification, sanction and Direct Benefit Transfer of government scholarships.

Instead of hunting ministry websites one by one, students use one login for schemes from central ministries, UGC, AICTE and many states and Union Territories. The idea is simple: one database, less duplication, faster payments, and a public trail of who applied and who was paid.

NSP is not a single scholarship. It is the platform that hosts 100-plus schemes. Pre-matric support for school students, post-matric support after Class 10, merit awards for college, minority and disability schemes, defence-related awards and selected fellowships all sit behind the same door.

What changed for 2026-27

Three rules now decide whether your application even starts.

  1. One Time Registration is mandatory. From AY 2024-25 onwards you cannot fill a scholarship form without a 14-digit OTR generated with Aadhaar or an Aadhaar Enrolment ID. The number stays with you for your entire academic career.
  2. You can combine schemes more clearly. From AY 2026-27, students may apply for one merit-based scheme and one or more welfare-based schemes, subject to each scheme’s rules.
  3. Face authentication is part of OTR. The NSP OTR app and Aadhaar Face RD app are used for e-KYC. If biometrics are locked in Aadhaar, face authentication fails until you unlock them on MyAadhaar.

The portal for 2026-27 opened on 1 June 2026. Renewal windows for PM-USP Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students and the PM USP Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are open, with student applications closing 31 October 2026.

Who can apply for National Scholarship Portal

Eligibility is scheme-specific, but most National Scholarship Portal schemes share a common floor.

  • You must be an Indian citizen studying in a recognised institution.
  • Your institute must be onboarded on NSP (search institutes on the public section of the portal).
  • Aadhaar, or Aadhaar Enrolment ID for minors, is required for OTR.
  • A bank account in the student’s name should be Aadhaar-seeded so DBT can credit the account.
  • Family income ceilings are usually Rs 2.5 lakh per year for many welfare schemes. Merit schemes can be higher. PM-USP CSSS uses a family income cap of Rs 4.5 lakh and an 80th percentile cut-off in Class 12. NMMSS uses an income cap of Rs 3.5 lakh.
  • Category certificates (SC, ST, OBC, EBC, DNT, minority, PwD) are required where the scheme is category-based.
  • Students with disabilities must first log in on the UDID portal, give consent to share UDID details, then apply on NSP.

Major schemes students actually search for

Scheme names on the portal can look different from the names used in news. These are the clusters most applicants meet:

  • Pre-matric and post-matric welfare schemes for SC, ST, OBC, EBC, DNT and minority students, including PM-YASASVI streams.
  • National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for meritorious Class 9 to 12 students from lower-income families. Selected students receive Rs 12,000 per year. The student application deadline for 2026-27 was extended to 30 September 2026.
  • PM-USP Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students (CSSS) for students above the 80th percentile in Class 12. Annual award is typically in the Rs 12,000 to Rs 20,000 range. Student applications for the current cycle close 31 October 2026.
  • PM USP Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
  • Scholarships for students with disabilities (pre-matric, post-matric and top-class).
  • Top-class education schemes for SC students and for OBC, EBC and DNT students in notified institutes, covering a much larger share of fees and living costs.
  • Selected fellowships, including schemes listed under the NSP fellowship section.

What the money actually covers

NSP does not pay one flat amount. Benefits follow the scheme guideline.

Typical components include:

  • Academic allowance or maintenance for day scholars and hostellers
  • Tuition or course fee reimbursement, sometimes capped
  • Books and stationery support on some top-class schemes
  • Annual lump-sum awards on merit schemes (for example Rs 12,000 under NMMSS)

PM-YASASVI post-matric support for OBC, EBC and DNT students is grouped by course type, with combined academic allowance and tuition support commonly ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 a year depending on the group. Top-class schemes at notified institutes can cover full admissible fees plus living support and, in some SC top-class rules, a one-time computer grant.

Payment is by Direct Benefit Transfer after institute and nodal officer verification. Track credits on PFMS: Know Your Payment

How One Time Registration works

OTR is the bottleneck. Complete it before you touch the scholarship form.

What you need

  • Active mobile number
  • Aadhaar, or Enrolment ID if Aadhaar is not yet issued
  • For a minor without Aadhaar, parent or legal guardian Aadhaar can be used, within the stated limits
  • Android phone for the NSP OTR app and Aadhaar Face RD app, or a nearby Common Service Centre

Steps

  1. Open OTR registration or the NSP OTR app from Google Play.
  2. Register the mobile number and complete the web or app steps.
  3. Finish e-KYC with face authentication. Unlock Aadhaar biometrics first if authentication fails.
  4. Save the 14-digit OTR. One student, one OTR. Duplicate OTRs can lead to debarment.

OTR is free on the portal and app. CSCs may charge a fixed Rs 30 for the full assisted process, including OTR and form filing. Find a centre at https://locator.csccloud.in.

Generating OTR is not the same as applying for a scholarship. You still have to log in and submit a fresh or renewal form.

How to apply on the National Scholarship Portal

  1. Finish OTR.
  2. Log in at https://scholarships.gov.in/ApplicationForm with OTR ID and password.
  3. Choose Fresh or Renewal for AY 2026-27.
  4. Fill personal, academic, income and bank details exactly as they appear on certificates and the passbook.
  5. Select the eligible scheme or schemes. From this year you may take one merit-based scheme plus one or more welfare-based schemes if you qualify.
  6. Upload documents in the size and format the form allows.
  7. Submit and note the Application ID.
  8. Follow up with your Institute Nodal Officer. Unverified applications do not move to payment.

Renewal students must still use OTR and apply again for the new academic year. Previous-year login pages do not replace the current form.

Documents most schemes ask for

Keep scans ready. Exact lists differ by scheme.

  • Student bank passbook (name, account number, IFSC)
  • Income certificate from a competent authority
  • Caste, minority, disability or domicile certificate, if applicable
  • Mark sheet of the last qualifying exam
  • Bonafide or fee receipt from the current institute
  • Photograph and signature
  • UDID consent for disability schemes

Important dates for 2026-27

Dates move by scheme. Treat these as the current public window, then recheck your scheme page.

  • Portal open for AY 2026-27: 1 June 2026
  • NMMSS student applications: extended to 30 September 2026
  • Many central and PM-USP student applications: 31 October 2026
  • Institute verification on several schemes: 15 November 2026

How to check status and payment

After you submit:

  • Application status is available after login on the apply section.
  • Older-year payment views are linked from the Students page.
  • DBT credits can be tracked on PFMS Know Your Payment.
  • If the form is marked defective, correct it before the defective-application window closes.

Grievances can be filed through the portal grievance page rather than through unofficial agents.

Mistakes that delay or kill applications

  • Applying on a fake site that copies the NSP logo
  • Skipping OTR and assuming last year’s account still works
  • Entering a bank account that is not Aadhaar-seeded
  • Locked Aadhaar biometrics during face authentication
  • Income certificate from the wrong issuing office
  • Waiting for the last day, then discovering the institute is not KYC-ready on NSP
  • Paying anyone who promises “guaranteed approval”

Government scholarships on NSP have no application fee on the portal itself. CSC assistance has a notified Rs 30 cap. Anyone asking for a percentage of the scholarship is not part of the process.

Frequently asked questions

Is the National Scholarship Portal only for central schemes?
No. It hosts central schemes and many state schemes. Some states still run a separate portal for their own awards, so check both if your state does that.

Can a student get more than one scholarship?
From AY 2026-27 the stated rule is one merit-based scheme plus one or more welfare-based schemes, if each scheme allows it. Do not assume two merit awards will be paid together.

Do Class 11 and college students use the same portal?
Yes. Pre-matric, post-matric and higher education schemes share NSP, with different forms and income rules.

When does the money arrive?
After student submission, institute verification and nodal verification. Many cycles credit between late winter and early summer of the academic year, but the calendar is scheme-wise.

Final word

The National Scholarship Portal is not complicated once you treat it as two jobs: get the OTR right, then submit the correct scheme form before your institute’s verification window shuts. For 2026-27 that window is already open. Start with OTR, run the eligibility checker, and apply on scholarships.gov.in only. The students who get paid are rarely the ones with the most documents. They are the ones who filed on time and followed the application through institute verification.
