Scholarship Categories

The Scholarship is in two categories:

Research scholarships

  • The research scholarship (research fellowshipPhDPostdoc) is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree is the minimum qualification required) who are planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level.
  • Research scholarships are awarded for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and the two federal institutes of technology, as well as the four research institutes. Only candidates nominated by an academic supervisor at one of these higher education institutions will be considered.

Art scholarships

  • Art scholarships are open to art students wishing to pursue an initial arts master’s degree in Switzerland.
  • Art scholarships are awarded for study at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts. This scholarship is available to students from a limited number of countries only.

Scholarship Eligibility

Applicants for the University Scholarships should meet the following requirements:

  1. Possess a university degree (Bachelors/Masters) at the start of the scholarship period.
  2. Showcase their academic prowess and outline their objectives.
  3. Establish communication with the institution or the supervising professor for their intended research period. Additional information might be requested by universities, along with specific conditions to determine eligibility for admission.
  4. Be aged under 35 (born on or after January 1st, 1987).
  5. Exhibit proficiency in the language of instruction (French, German, Italian, or English) to maximize the benefits of their studies in Switzerland.

Criteria for Selection

The FCS evaluates scholarship applications based on three primary factors:

  1. Candidate’s profile.
  2. Quality of the research project or artistic endeavor.
  3. Potential for future research collaboration and synergies.

Applications undergo initial screening by relevant national authorities or Swiss diplomatic representations. Shortlisted applications then receive assessment from the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), which ultimately makes the final decisions. This commission consists of professors from Swiss public universities, and scholarship awards are granted in recognition of academic and scientific excellence.
