Scholarship Benefits
The Canon Foundation-Kyoto University Japan-Africa Exchange Program provides a wealth of benefits for selected fellows:
- Generous Financial Support: Fellows receive a stipend ranging from 22,500 to 27,500 Euros per year, prorated for different lengths of stay. This funding covers living expenses, travel costs, research expenses, and insurance.
- Research Opportunities: Access to Kyoto University’s vast resources and networks, or the chance to conduct research in Africa for Kyoto University fellows.
- International Collaboration: Engage with top researchers and institutions in both Japan and Africa, fostering cross-continental partnerships.
- Flexibility: Fellowships can last from a minimum of three months to a maximum of one year, and the time can be split between countries.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this program, applicants must:
- Hold at least a Master’s degree.
- Be employed at Kyoto University or one of its partner institutions in Africa as a post-doctoral fellow or faculty member at the time of application.
- For African applicants, one of the two required reference letters must be from their prospective host at Kyoto University, proving an existing partnership.

Required Documents
Applicants must submit the following documents:
- Research Plan: Include a clear title, start and end dates, and a general cost estimate (maximum 2 pages).
- Reference Letters: Two letters, one from someone familiar with your academic work and the other from your prospective host at Kyoto University (maximum 1 page each).
- Curriculum Vitae: Detailed and up-to-date.
- Copy of Doctoral Certificate: Or your highest academic degree.
- Passport-Size Photograph: A recent photo of yourself.
- List of Academic Publications or Professional Achievements: In chronological order, including all authors, publication places, years, and page references.

Steps on How to Apply
- Prepare Your Research Plan: Clearly outline your research objectives, methodology, timeline, and budget.
- Gather Reference Letters: Secure one letter from someone who can speak to your academic qualifications and another from your prospective host at Kyoto University.
- Compile Required Documents: Ensure you have your CV, doctoral certificate, passport-size photo, and a comprehensive list of your publications or achievements ready.
- Submit Your Application: Send all documents via email to Kyoto University Africa Unit at canon_caas@jambo.africa.kyoto-u.ac.jp.
- Wait for Selection Results: Applications are first reviewed by Kyoto University and then by the CFE Selection Committee. You will be notified of the results by the end of March 2025.
- Begin Your Fellowship: If selected, you can start your fellowship as early as April 1, 2025.
