About Government of Ireland Scholarship for International Students

The objective of the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) scheme in 2023 for international students is to demonstrate Ireland’s commitment to engaging with targeted partner countries. The scheme is specifically implemented in the higher education sector and is jointly financed by the Government of Ireland and higher education institutions (HEIs).

The scholarships offered through this program are regarded as esteemed honors that embody the fundamental principles of Ireland as a centre for international education, research, and innovations. It is anticipated that each scholarship recipient will contribute to raising awareness of Ireland’s standing as a destination of excellence for global education among a broader audience of potential students. The scholarship covers a wide range of disciplines, including science, engineering, the humanities, and the arts.

Scholarship Benefits

The GOI-IES is available to students from all countries with a domicile of origin outside the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. The scholarship provides:

  • A full fee waiver
  • €10,000 for one study year. This fund is directed at covering student costs and living expenses.
  • The scholarship is awarded annually.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must:

  • Be a citizen of a country outside the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.
  • Have applied to a recognized higher education institution in Ireland and must have been offered a conditional or final admission. 
  • Must have excellent academic credentials. 
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills and a commitment to their chosen field of study.
  • Excellent communication skills; 
  • Have participated in extracurricular activities. For example: humanitarian work; politics, either local, national, or international; the arts; sports;
  • Have a strong rationale for pursuing their study in Ireland.

Scholarship Requirements

The applications must cover the following, as requested in the online application tool:

  • Academic qualifications, achievements, and/or work experience (40 marks)
  • Personal Statement. Applicants will be required to demonstrate:
  1. The benefit of becoming a GOI-IES Scholar; to themselves (personally and professionally), to the institution; to Ireland (economically and societally), as well as their country of origin. (15 marks)
  2. How they will extend themselves beyond their project or studies to become actively involved in Irish society in order to maximize their academic and cultural exchange experience and to raise awareness of the GOI-IES scheme in Ireland and beyond (15 marks)
  3. The extent to which they have a long-term interest in Ireland, how they will promote links with Ireland during their time as scholars and also after as Alumni. (15 marks)
  • Two references uploaded through the online application portal (please note that the HEA is not able to accept references submitted through email or other sources outside of the online application portal). (15 marks)
