Sainsbury Science Management Fellows Scholarship 2027/28: How To Win £50,000 for an Imperial MBA in UK

·

Sainsbury Science Management Fellows Scholarship 2027

If you trained as a scientist and now want the commercial skills to lead a lab, scale a spin-out, or sit on an executive team, the cost of a top MBA is often the barrier. Imperial’s full-time MBA fee is £78,000 for recent entry years. That is where the Sainsbury Science Management Fellows Scholarship comes in.

The award gives selected UK scientists £50,000 towards a full-time MBA at Imperial Business School or another approved UK school. You do not need a confirmed MBA offer before you apply. If you win without a place, you receive an offer in principle that stays valid for 12 months.

This guide explains who funds it, who can apply, what the money covers, how the process works, and which official pages to use.

Scholarship Summary

  • Host Country: UK
  • Host University: Imperial College London (Imperial Business School). The same award can also be used at other approved UK business schools.
  • Scholarship Type: MSC Scholarships
  • Eligible Countries: UK

Overview of Science Sainsbury Management Fellows Scholarship?

The scholarship sits inside the wider Sainsbury Management Fellows scheme, created in 1987 by Lord Sainsbury of Turville to give technically trained people a serious business education. The charity behind it is the Engineers and Scientists in Business Fellowship (ESBF). Since launch, the scheme has supported more than 400 Fellows working in manufacturing, energy, finance, IT, telecoms, and technology.

In 2024 ESBF partnered with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to run a dedicated science stream. Each year it aims to award up to eight MBA scholarships of £50,000 to UK scientists who want to add finance, strategy, and leadership to their technical base. The stated purpose is UK economic prosperity and the country’s standing in scientific research.

Imperial College London lists the award for the 2027/2028 academic year against its Business School and the full-time MBA. The College page lists the value as £50,000, Home fee status, full-time study, and new entrants only. Students already on the course cannot apply.

Why This Scholarship Attracts Strong Scientists

A first-class science degree teaches you how to measure, model, and publish. It rarely teaches you how to price a product, raise capital, manage a P&L, or take a technology through regulation and customers. That gap is the point of the award.

Fellows are expected to stay connected to the UK after graduation. The long-run story ESBF tells is not “another funded MBA.” It is scientists who can commercialise research, lead industrial R&D, or build companies. Alumni of the wider scheme are credited with creating hundreds of companies and tens of thousands of jobs in the UK.

For applicants, three features stand out:

  • The cash is large enough to change the financing plan for a one-year MBA.
  • You can apply before you hold a business-school offer.
  • Winning puts you into a lifelong Fellows network with mentoring, events, and peer support.

Imperial’s own MBA page is useful if London and a one-year format are your target: Imperial Full-Time MBA.

Scholarship Benefits in Plain Terms

Do not treat the £50,000 as a simple tuition discount administered by Imperial. ESBF pays the award as a lump sum to successful candidates before the MBA starts. Recipients decide how to use it: fees, course materials, relocation, or other costs tied to taking the degree.

What you actually receive:

  • £50,000 cash award towards a full-time MBA
  • Up to eight science scholarships each year (a separate engineering stream exists)
  • Offer in principle for 12 months if you do not yet have a school place
  • Mentoring support in some cases while you complete business-school applications
  • Membership of the Sainsbury Management Fellows community (400-plus engineers, scientists, and business leaders)

Imperial still charges its published MBA fee. For 2026 entry the full-time MBA is listed at £78,000. Confirm the 2027/28 figure on Imperial’s fees pages when you budget. The scholarship reduces the net cost; it does not automatically make the programme free.

Eligibility Requirements for Science Sainsbury Management Fellows Scholarship 2027

Who Is Eligible? Key Requirements for 2027/2028

Imperial’s 2027/2028 page and NPL’s current eligibility line up on the core rules. Applicants must:

  • Be a UK national who intends to live in the UK after graduation
  • Hold a first degree in science or allied technology, preferably a first or upper-second class BSc or MSc, or a PhD
  • Have 4–10 years of relevant experience after the first degree (NPL describes this as early-career, with at least four years)
  • Be a new entrant. People already studying the MBA are not eligible on the Imperial listing

The scheme says it wants applicants from groups underrepresented in science. Social sciences are not treated as eligible science degrees. Always check Annex A in the latest Guide to Applicants on the NPL site.

Older rounds and the engineering sister scheme have sometimes required a GMAT score around 650. Imperial’s 2027/2028 scholarship page does not list GMAT as a scholarship condition, but Imperial’s full-time MBA itself requires GMAT or GRE for admission. Treat school entry tests as a separate hurdle. Download the current scientist guidance notes before you write the form.

Where You Can Use the Award

For scientists, the £50,000 is tied to a full-time MBA at an approved UK school. NPL currently lists:

  • Imperial Business School
  • Saïd Business School, University of Oxford
  • Cambridge Judge Business School
  • Warwick Business School
  • Alliance Manchester Business School
  • Cranfield School of Management
  • University of Edinburgh Business School
  • Durham University Business School

Part-time, online, weekend, and executive MBAs are not supported. If Imperial is your first choice, apply to the full-time MBA on its own timeline as well as to the scholarship.

The engineering version of the Sainsbury award has a wider international school list. Do not mix the two application routes.

Application Deadlines for 2026–2027

Imperial’s scholarship record for 2027/2028 leaves the deadline field blank and points applicants to NPL. NPL publishes the windows:

  • Open now: 2 June 2026 to 30 September 2026
  • Next window: 3 November 2026 to 2 March 2027

Applications can be submitted at any time in those windows, with or without a confirmed MBA place. Interviews typically follow each round. You must be able to attend the interview to stay in contention.

How the Selection Process Works

NPL administers the science awards on ESBF’s behalf. The published path is:

  1. Submit the online application and pass an eligibility check. Ineligible candidates are told why.
  2. Panel review of eligible files. Strong cases are invited to interview; others receive an email, sometimes with feedback.
  3. Interview (about 45 minutes) with a panel that can include NPL faculty and Sainsbury Management Fellows alumni.
  4. Award. Candidates with a school place get a letter of offer. Others get an offer in principle that must be used within 12 months.

ESBF’s FAQs say unsuccessful candidates who were not shortlisted may re-apply later if they have not already taken a full-time MBA. Candidates who reached interview and were not selected generally cannot re-apply. Read that rule in the current notes before you treat this as a practice round.

Panels look for career progression, leadership or leadership potential, and a credible plan to work in the UK after the MBA. A vague “I want to work in innovation” statement is weaker than a specific path: product leadership in a science-based firm, a spin-out, industrial strategy, or scaling a research-intensive business.

How to Build a Competitive File

Use the official Guide to Applicants. Then treat the written form as a leadership case, not a CV dump.

  • Show what you did after the degree, not only where you studied. Four to ten years should read as increasing scope.
  • Explain the business problem you want to be able to solve after the MBA. Tie it to UK industry, research commercialisation, or a sector where science is the product.
  • Name why a full-time MBA, and why one of the listed schools, is the right tool. If Imperial is the target, connect its science-and-technology setting to your next role.
  • Apply to the MBA in parallel if you can. An offer in principle is useful; a real school offer removes uncertainty.
  • Watch the NPL webinar on the scheme page before you submit.
  • Read first-cohort profiles: Science awardees.

Imperial MBA Timing Versus Scholarship Timing

These are two processes. Imperial runs staged MBA admissions with multiple deadlines; a recent full-time MBA page listed a next deadline of 22 September 2026 for a September 2027 start. Scholarship funding at the School is allocated across rounds, so early MBA applications still help.

A practical sequence for many 2027/28 candidates:

  • Draft the NPL application during the June–September 2026 window.
  • Submit or advance the Imperial MBA application in the same period.
  • If you win the scholarship first, use the 12-month offer in principle to finish school admissions.
  • If you gain the MBA offer first, add it to the scholarship file before interview.

Do not assume a School scholarship and this external award stack automatically. Ask Imperial’s funding team how external awards interact with College aid.

Who This Award Is Not For

Skip this route if you need a part-time or executive MBA while you keep a full-time job, if you are not a UK national, if you plan to leave the UK after graduation, if your degree is outside science and allied technology, or if you are already enrolled on the MBA. Those cases fail the published rules.

Scientists who want a research doctorate should look at Research Council and university PhD studentships instead. This is a taught MBA award, even though Imperial’s scholarship record labels the degree level as master’s research.

Final Check Before You Apply

Confirm four things on the live pages, not on a blog:

  1. The current application window on NPL
  2. Eligibility and Annex A in the latest scientist guidance notes
  3. Imperial’s 2027/2028 scholarship entry
  4. MBA fees and GMAT/GRE rules on Imperial’s full-time MBA and fees and funding

The Sainsbury Science Management Fellows Scholarship is one of the few six-figure-adjacent awards in the UK aimed specifically at scientists moving into management. The bar is high and the cohort is small. If you meet the nationality, degree, and experience tests, the June–September 2026 window is the live opportunity to put a £50,000 MBA plan on the table.
