Overview of MRC Early Independence Fellowship
The MRC Early Independence Fellowship (officially titled “Early independence: career development fellowship”) sits within UKRI’s new Fellowship Investment Framework. It is designed for researchers who have already shown productivity and career consolidation after their PhD and are now ready to make the decisive move toward independence.
Unlike studentships or early postdoctoral awards, this fellowship expects you to lead your own research plans, begin recruiting a small team, and create a clear research niche that does not simply continue the work of your current supervisor or proposed sponsor. The scheme funds both non-clinical researchers and, through a parallel route, clinically active scientists.
Successful fellows receive support for up to five years (pro rata for part-time awards). The funding covers your salary plus research costs at 80% of full economic cost, giving you the freedom to concentrate on science rather than chasing short-term contracts.

Who Should Apply for the MRC Early Independence Fellowship?
Eligibility is deliberately flexible on years of experience. There is no upper limit on postdoctoral time. What matters is evidence of career consolidation, productivity, and a convincing plan for independence.
You must:
- Hold a PhD or equivalent by the time the award starts
- Demonstrate skills, experience and research output across previous positions
- Propose research plans that establish your own niche and do not significantly overlap with those of your current group leaders or sponsors
- Work within the MRC scientific remit (infections and immunity, molecular and cellular medicine, neurosciences and mental health, population and systems medicine, global health, methodology, public health, and translational research)
- Be hosted by an eligible UK research organisation
Applications are welcomed from researchers of any nationality, provided the fellowship is based at a UK eligible organisation.
You are not eligible if you:
- Have already secured a comparable independent fellowship or new investigator award
- Hold grants as project lead that already support research staff (indicating you have already achieved independence)
- Are clinically active (there is a dedicated Clinician Scientist Fellowship for registered healthcare professionals)
- Currently have another UKRI fellowship or MRC new investigator application under assessment
If you hold a permanent academic post, the bar is higher. Only exceptional cases where the fellowship enables a clear change in career trajectory (for example, moving from a teaching-heavy role into research) are considered, and you would normally need to convert the post to a proleptic appointment.
Full eligibility details and the demand-management rules are set out on the official UKRI page linked above.
What Does the Fellowship Actually Fund?
There is no fixed upper limit on the amount you can request, but every cost must be justified and represent value for money. Typical allowable costs include:
- Your full salary
- Support for a small number of research and technical staff appropriate to the early-independence stage
- Research consumables, equipment and travel
- Training and development activities
- Data management, preservation and sharing costs
- Estates and indirect costs
- Visa fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge for you and dependants
- Public involvement and engagement costs
- Up to 12 months spent at a second UK organisation, overseas laboratory or industrial partner
The scheme will not fund PhD studentships, publication charges, large research teams, senior staff salaries, or costs for sponsors and mentors.
You may also apply for joint funding with partner organisations such as Diabetes UK, Parkinson’s UK, Kidney Research UK, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Macular Society, DEBRA, The Borne Foundation, or Addiction Healthcare Goals. Joint awards carry the prestige of dual branding and often additional networking opportunities.

How to Structure a Competitive Application
The application is completed entirely in the UKRI Funding Service and is structured around specific questions with strict word limits. The most heavily weighted sections are:
Vision (550 words): Explain why the research is excellent, timely and important. Identify the potential health, societal or economic benefits and how you will communicate findings.
Approach (2,800 words): Provide a detailed, feasible project plan including milestones, risk management, methodology, collaborations and (where relevant) a Gantt chart. Address diversity and inclusion in study design and, if animals are used, sex as a biological variable.
Career Development (1,000 words): Show how the fellowship will deliver a clear trajectory toward independence and how you will support the career development of any staff you supervise.
Applicant Capability to Deliver (2,000 words): Use the Résumé for Research and Innovation (R4RI) format to evidence your track record of generating new knowledge, developing others, contributing to the research community, and delivering wider impact.
Host Organisation Support (1,000 words): Your Head of Department must provide a strong supporting statement covering protected research time, training, facilities and strategic fit. Additional statements are required if you plan time at a second organisation or have recently changed departments.
Sponsors: At least one senior sponsor based in the host department is mandatory. They act as guarantor of quality rather than day-to-day supervisor.
Other required sections cover reproducibility and statistical design, data management, ethics and responsible research and innovation, animal involvement (if applicable), resources and cost justification, and any project partners or industry collaborations.
Practical Tips That Improve Success Rates
- Start conversations with potential sponsors and your research office early. Costing and institutional approval take time.
- Make the independence narrative crystal clear. Reviewers repeatedly reject applications that look like extensions of existing group work.
- Use the full five years. Panels expect ambitious but credible long-term plans.
- Address career breaks, caring responsibilities or part-time working openly; UKRI is explicit that these will be taken into account.
- Follow the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers and the Technician Commitment when describing how you will develop staff.
- If your work involves industry partners, complete the Industry Collaboration Framework section carefully.
- Keep the summary (550 words) written in plain English—it is used both for public communication and to assign expert reviewers.

Why This Fellowship Matters for the Future of Medical Research
The MRC Early Independence Fellowship is more than salary support. It is a deliberate investment in the next generation of research leaders who will shape the UK’s response to major health challenges—from antimicrobial resistance and neurodegenerative disease to mental health and global health threats. By giving researchers the time and resources to set their own agenda, UKRI aims to accelerate discovery and translation while building a more diverse and resilient research workforce.
If you have the track record, the vision and the determination to lead, this is the scheme that can turn that potential into reality.
Applications close at 4:00 pm UK time on 15 September 2026. Begin your application on the UKRI Funding Service today and make sure your research office has sufficient time to complete the final checks.
