Canada’s largest leadership-based graduate award is not a quiet tuition discount. The McCall MacBain Scholarships at McGill University fund a master’s or second-entry professional degree, then surround that degree with mentors, coaches, a cohort, and a leadership curriculum designed for people who already take responsibility for others. If you are finishing a bachelor’s degree in the United States or Canada, or you graduated recently, this is one of the few awards that treats community work and character as seriously as GPA.
The program was created in 2019 through a $200 million gift from John and Marcy McCall MacBain, then the largest single gift in Canadian history. Each year the foundation and McGill select up to 30 Scholars: typically 20 Canadians (citizens, permanent residents, and refugees) and 10 international students. Another 100 or so candidates leave the interview process with Finalist or Regional Awards. For 2027 entry, applications are already open.

What the McCall MacBain Scholarship actually pays for
A Scholar does not cobble together loans and part-time work to stay in Montreal. The award is built to remove that friction.
- Tuition and compulsory fees for the full normal duration of an eligible full-time program (45 credits or more, mainly on McGill’s downtown or Macdonald campuses). See McGill’s graduate fee pages for how charges are structured.
- A living stipend of $2,300 CAD per month during academic terms.
- A one-time relocation grant for the move to Montreal.
- Up to $5,000 for a meaningful summer project if you are not enrolled in a summer academic term.
- Mentorship with senior leaders, executive coaching, bi-weekly seminars, summer intensives, place-based learning trips in Quebec or elsewhere in Canada, and access to the McCall MacBain House on the edge of campus.
- Beginner-to-advanced French courses through McGill, plus optional Indigenous learning sessions.
That package is why US applicants often compare this award with Rhodes, Marshall, or Knight-Hennessy, even though the campus is in Montreal rather than Oxford or Stanford.
If you reach final interviews and are not named a Scholar, you are still in the money. Canadian finalists can receive $10,000 toward McGill. International finalists can receive $20,000 per year for up to two years at McGill. Regional Awards ($5,000 Canadian / $10,000 international) can be used at any public university in Canada. Those secondary awards matter: they turn a near-miss into real funding.

Who can apply for McCall MacBain Scholarships (2027 cohort)
You must meet one of these three rules:
- You are on track to earn your first bachelor’s degree by August 2027.
- You earned that first bachelor’s degree in the last five years (January 2021 or later).
- You earned it earlier than that and you were 30 or younger on January 1, 2026.
You also need to meet McGill’s minimum academic and English-language requirements for the program you want. Check those on the McGill how-to-apply pages.
Age is not a hard cap for current students and recent graduates. People already in a graduate program may apply only if they plan to start a new eligible McGill program in 2027. PhDs, executive master’s degrees, part-time programs, and most joint degrees are out of scope.
Programs that qualify
More than 150 master’s fields are eligible, including MA, MSc, MEng, MBA, MPP, LLM, MSW, MUP, MMus, and professional science degrees. Three second-entry professional undergraduate programs also qualify: BCL/JD (Law), MDCM (Medicine), and DMD (Dentistry). Those last three explain why the official wording mentions “second-entry professional undergraduate” even though this is not a first-year bachelor’s scholarship.
Confirm the list on the program overview and the McGill program catalogue. The scholarship application is separate from McGill admission. Most people apply for the scholarship first, then apply to McGill in the fall. Finalists must apply to McGill by December even if a department deadline is later.
Why the US and Canada track is different
The title of this post is deliberate. Students and graduates of universities in the United States and Canada, and Canadians living abroad, have until September 23, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. ET. Everyone else must file by August 19, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. ET.
Endorsement rules also split by citizenship and campus:
- Canadian applicants who are current students or who graduated in 2024–2026 generally need a university endorsement. Graduates from 2023 or earlier usually apply without one.
- International applicants who are current students or recent graduates typically need endorsement. If you graduated in 2023 or earlier from a Canadian university or from a listed partner university abroad, you may apply directly. If your university is not a partner, you need endorsement no matter how long ago you graduated.
US campuses handle this through fellowship offices (Harvard URAF, Berkeley OURS, Northeastern, Minnesota ONIS, and many others publish internal deadlines that sit earlier than September 23). How selection actually works
The foundation does not hide its criteria. Reviewers look for five things:
- Exceptional character
- Community engagement
- Leadership potential
- Entrepreneurial spirit
- Academic strength and intellectual curiosity
That last item is not “highest GPA in the room.” Readers want evidence that you stretched yourself, that your proposed McGill program fits your next decade of work, and that you can learn with people who disagree with you.
The written file usually includes an online form, four short essays, a one-page CV, unofficial transcripts, and two reference forms: one academic (or professional, for some management programs) and one community. References must be submitted through the portal by the same deadline as your application. Family members and classmates are not acceptable referees.
Timeline after you submit:
- June–September 2026: written applications
- October–December 2026: more than 250 regional interviews (in person for many Canadian candidates; online for many international candidates)
- March 2027: about 85 finalists fly to Montreal (travel covered) for final interviews
- May 2027: offers, conditional on McGill admission
- September 2027: Scholars arrive (a few summer-start programs begin earlier)
You may apply at most twice across cycles, with extra limits if you previously accepted a Regional Award or attended final interviews.

How to write a file that survives first cut
Treat this as a leadership application that happens to require a graduate plan, not a graduate application that happens to mention service.
Write the community essay with scenes, not slogans. Name the group, the constraint, the decision you made, and what changed for other people. The entrepreneurial criterion is not “I founded a startup.” It is whether you spotted an unmet need and organized others around a solution.
Ask referees early. A late community letter is an incomplete file. Give each writer the selection criteria and two concrete stories they can cite.
Choose a McGill program you can defend in an interview. Interviewers will test whether the degree is a vehicle or a costume. If you want law, be ready to talk about the problem you will practice on, not only the ranking of the Faculty of Law.
If you are a US applicant, explain why McGill and Montreal, not why you almost applied to a US professional school. Montreal is bilingual, relatively affordable compared with many US coastal cities, and ranked among the world’s leading student cities. You do not need French to study at McGill, but the city rewards people who try.
Register for an official information session and read current Scholar profiles on mccallmacbainscholars.org. The people already in the cohort are the best preview of the standard.
What this award is not
It is not a PhD fellowship. It is not an automatic ticket into McGill; admission is a separate decision. Offers cannot be deferred and cannot be used part-time. The McGill application fee is not covered. Standardized tests are not required for the scholarship file, but your target department may still require them later.
Those limits are useful. They keep the cohort small enough that mentorship is real.
Should you apply for McCall MacBain Scholarships?
Apply if you already lead something that is not only on a résumé line, you can name the problem you want the next degree to serve, and you can meet the August or September deadline without rushing your referees. The 2027 cohort will spend two years (or the normal length of a longer professional program) in a city that rewards curiosity, then leave with a network that is supposed to outlast the stipend.

The scholarship calendar runs a year ahead of enrolment. Waiting until winter 2027 is how strong candidates miss the only deadline that matters.
