A one-year Masters in English Literature at Cambridge is expensive. International fees sit at the top of the UK scale, living costs in the city are high, and even Home students often need a stipend to study full time without working around the clock. That is why a single, college-backed studentship can change the entire calculation.
The Gould Studentship in English Literature is one of those awards. It is offered through Trinity College for a one-year, full-time Masters in English Literature at the University of Cambridge. Only one award is available each year. It is granted on academic merit. For 2027/28 entry it is listed with an annual value range of £26,691 to £72,127, which reflects the difference between Home and overseas fee packages plus maintenance and extras.
This guide explains what the studentship actually pays, who can apply, which courses count, how the Cambridge funding portal works, and how to give yourself a realistic chance at an award that has only one winner.

What the Gould Studentship Is
The Gould Studentship funds a one-year Masters course in English Literature at Cambridge. Trinity College administers it. The Faculty of English is the main academic home, but the award is not limited to one course title. Candidates for MPhils in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic (ASNC) can also be considered if their proposed dissertation falls within English Literature.
That last point matters. Many applicants search only for “English Faculty funding” and miss a legitimate second route through medieval languages and literatures, provided the research question is literary rather than purely historical or linguistic.

On completion of the MPhil, the holder is eligible to apply for a Trinity Internal Graduate Studentship if they want to continue to a PhD at Trinity. The Gould award itself is not extendable. It lasts for the length of the Masters course.
What the Award Covers
Cambridge’s funding search lists the purpose of the award as fees (Home), fees (International), maintenance, student visa cost, Student Immigration Health Surcharge, and other costs. Trinity’s own page is more specific about the core package.
In practice, a successful candidate can expect:
- Full postgraduate course fees at the Home or International rate, depending on fee status
- A maintenance allowance at the UKRI rate (pro-rated for a nine-month MPhil)
- Visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge where these apply
- A research emolument of £500 per year
- For overseas students, the cost of a return ticket from the country of origin to the United Kingdom
The published band of £26,691 to £72,127 is an annual envelope, not a promise that every recipient receives the top figure. An overseas student paying the higher fee rate will sit toward the upper end. A Home student will sit lower because the fee component is smaller. The living-cost element tracks the UKRI minimum stipend, which for 2026/27 is £21,805 for a full year and is then adjusted for course length.
This is closer to a full package than most departmental Masters bursaries. Many English MPhil awards cover only a slice of fees. Gould is designed to remove the main financial barriers for one student so they can treat the year as research time, not a scramble between seminars and part-time work.

Who Can Apply for Gould Studentship in English Literature
Eligibility is narrow in level of study and broad in nationality.
- Prospective applicants only (you apply as you seek admission, not as a current Cambridge Masters student looking for mid-year support)
- Masters level
- Full-time study only
- Academic merit as the basis of the award
- Trinity College as the college of the award
- Faculty of English MPhil routes, plus ASNC MPhils where the dissertation is in English Literature
There is no published nationality restriction. Home and international applicants are both in scope because the award can pay either fee rate. That is unusual and is one reason the studentship is competitive.
The official record also flags “additional questions in the Applicant Portal.” That means the University application is not only an admissions form. If you meet the eligibility flags, the portal can present extra funding questions. Answer them. Leaving college and funding boxes blank is a common way strong applicants take themselves out of college competitions.
Which Courses Count
Start with the Faculty of English. The current flagship taught Masters is the MPhil in English Studies, a nine-month full-time course running from October to June. It combines seminar teaching with a supervised research project and is designed both as a standalone degree and as preparation for doctoral work. For 2027/28, applications open on 9 September 2026. The course application deadline and the course funding deadline are both 6 January 2027. The course starts on 1 October 2027.

The second route is the MPhil in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic. That course is also nine months full-time. Its general application deadline is later (May 2027 for 2027/28), but the funding deadline is still 6 January 2027. If you need Gould, Gates Cambridge, Cambridge Trust, or college funding, the January date is the one that matters, not the later admissions close. Your dissertation proposal must sit inside English Literature rather than, for example, purely archaeological or historical ASNC work.

Do not invent a third course and assume it qualifies. The published wording is English Literature at Masters level, with the ASNC exception stated explicitly. If your project is comparative literature housed in another faculty, check Trinity’s list before you treat Gould as a target award.
Why This Studentship Attracts Serious Applicants
Cambridge does not lack prestige. What it often lacks, at Masters level, is a clean full-cost award that international candidates can actually live on. Many of the largest Cambridge scholarships prefer PhDs. Gates Cambridge, for example, is available for a range of postgraduate degrees but is heavily weighted toward doctoral study. College Masters awards are fewer, smaller, and easy to miss because they live on college pages rather than in national scholarship round-ups.
Gould is visible if you know where to look, and almost invisible if you only search “fully funded Masters UK” without the college name. That gap is useful. Applicants who read Trinity’s funding list, match their proposal to English Literature, and meet the January funding deadline are already ahead of candidates who apply for admission in spring and then discover that college money has already been allocated.
The PhD pathway is a second reason the award is strategically valuable. A funded MPhil at Trinity, completed well, puts you in position to apply for a Trinity Internal Graduate Studentship. That is not a guaranteed continuation. It is a named next step that many other one-year bursaries do not offer.

How to Apply for Gould Studentship in English Literature
There is no free-standing Gould application form sitting on a separate website. The competition runs through the University of Cambridge postgraduate application.
- Choose an eligible course and read the course page, including the funding deadline, not only the final application deadline.
- Open an application in the Cambridge Applicant Portal when the cycle opens (9 September 2026 for 2027/28 English Studies).
- Indicate that you want to be considered for funding.
- Prefer Trinity College if you are targeting this award. College preference is not a secret code, but an award tenable at Trinity is awarded to someone who can take up membership there.
- Complete any additional funding questions the portal displays for this studentship.
- Submit a complete application, including references, by 23:59 GMT on the course funding deadline. For the main English and ASNC MPhils that date is 6 January 2027. US applicants who also want Gates Cambridge must meet the earlier Gates US deadline of 14 October 2026.
Trinity states that applicants wishing to be considered for most of its studentships do not complete a separate funding form. They are considered on the basis of the University application if they meet the criteria and have flagged funding. Only a few Trinity schemes require a later extra form. Gould is handled through the main process, with extra portal questions.

Key Dates for 2027/28
- Applications open: 9 September 2026
- Gates Cambridge US round (if relevant): 14 October 2026
- Course funding deadline for the main eligible MPhils: 6 January 2027, 23:59 GMT
- Gould application results window: March–April
- Course start: 1 October 2027
Treat January as a hard stop. Cambridge will not consider an incomplete file for funding because a referee was late. Ask referees in autumn. Upload transcripts early. Write the research statement as if a literary scholar, not a general scholarship committee, will read it.
How Selection Works
The published basis is academic merit. That usually means the quality of the first degree, the coherence of the proposed MPhil project, writing sample strength, and references that can compare you with other research-track students. Historical FOI material on related Trinity English awards shows that the college tracks applicant numbers and outcomes, which is another way of saying the pool is real and the award is not automatic for anyone who lists Trinity.
A competitive file typically shows:
- A first-class or very high 2:1 degree in English or a closely related field (ASNC applicants should make the literary focus unmistakable)
- A proposal that can be supervised at Cambridge and finished in a nine-month MPhil
- A writing sample that already sounds like research, not only like a polished undergraduate essay
- A clear reason for Cambridge and for Trinity, without turning the statement into a tourist brochure
Do not pad the proposal with a PhD-sized field. The MPhil is short. Committees notice when a candidate promises a book and delivers a topic that cannot be scoped in three terms.
After the MPhil
If the year goes well, two doors are worth planning for early.
The first is doctoral admission in the Faculty of English or in ASNC. The MPhil is built as preparation for that step. The second is Trinity’s internal graduate funding for students already in, or coming through, the college. The Gould page states that the student will be eligible to apply for a Trinity Internal Graduate Studentship for PhD study. Eligibility is not the same as an offer. You will still need a strong dissertation, a viable doctoral proposal, and the usual external-funding applications Trinity expects of internal candidates.
Even if you do not stay at Trinity, a fully funded Cambridge MPhil in English Literature is a serious credential for doctoral applications elsewhere and for research, editorial, and teaching posts that ask for evidence of independent literary work.
Other Funding You Should Apply for at the Same Time
Because only one Gould Studentship is awarded, apply as if you will not get it.
Use the Cambridge Postgraduate Funding Search and tick funding on the Applicant Portal so you enter the University and Cambridge Trust competitions that share the same January deadline. Read Trinity’s full awards list for neighbouring schemes such as the Alice and James Penney PhD Studentship in English or European Literature if your plan already includes a doctorate. Check Gates Cambridge only if you are eligible and can write the extra statements to a high standard. None of these applications usually conflict with Gould. They run on the same admissions file.
Final Check Before You Submit
Confirm three facts on official pages the week you apply, because funding databases are live and figures move:
- The award year and value on the Gould Studentship listing
- The funding deadline on your exact course page
- Trinity’s current wording on college postgraduate awards
Then submit early enough that references arrive before 23:59 GMT on the funding date. For a one-award studentship, the difference between a long-listed file and a missed cycle is often not brilliance. It is a complete application, a literary project that fits the Faculty, and a college preference that matches the funder.
