The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is a nonprofit agricultural research-for-development organization headquartered in Ibadan, Nigeria, with a mission to develop practical, science-based solutions to some of Africa’s major challenges in food security, poverty, malnutrition, environmental degradation, and sustainable agriculture. Founded in 1967, IITA conducts research and works with governments, research institutions, universities, development organizations, donors, farmers, and private-sector partners to turn agricultural science and innovation into solutions that can be adopted at scale across Africa. Its work covers important food crops such as cassava, maize, cowpea, soybean, yam, banana, and plantain, alongside research areas including crop improvement, plant health, seed systems, natural resource management, mechanization, nutrition and health, climate resilience, agribusiness, and digital agriculture. IITA operates across 28 countries through five regional hubs and combines scientific research, partnerships, training, and delivery models to support more productive and resilient agrifood systems.
