Most elite scholarships hunt for “future leaders.” The Churchill Scholarship hunts for something rarer: students who already do original science. If you are a US citizen with serious research behind you and a year at the University of Cambridge would change the trajectory of your work, this award is built for you.
Up to 18 Scholars are chosen each year. Sixteen pursue science, mathematics, or engineering. Two Kanders Churchill Scholars study science policy. The package is worth more than $80,000 and covers a 9- to 12-month Master’s at Churchill College, the only Cambridge college founded specifically around STEM.

What Makes the Churchill Scholarship Different
Sir Winston Churchill asked for this program when Churchill College was founded. His aim was practical: deepen the US–UK partnership so both countries stay strong in science and technology.
That origin still shapes selection. The Foundation does not score “ambassadorial qualities” or generic leadership. It selects on academic and research achievement, then gives Scholars tools to increase their impact: a science communication workshop, a science policy seminar, and guided visits to Chartwell and the Churchill War Rooms.
Past Scholars describe a year that US undergraduate research rarely offers: ownership of a project, time to chase hard questions, and a lab culture that treats a Master’s student as a colleague rather than a temporary extra pair of hands. One Scholar put it plainly: the open-endedness of Cambridge work was a stark contrast to neatly packaged undergraduate projects. Another said the award created the rare conditions needed for high-risk, high-reward research without putting an entire PhD on the line.

What the Award Pays For
The Churchill Scholarship is a full-cost package for one year of Master’s study.
Covered costs typically include:
- University and college tuition
- Roundtrip airfare to the United Kingdom
- Visa fees and the UK health surcharge
- A living stipend set higher than the UK Research Council standard
- Eligibility to apply for a $4,000 special research grant
The Foundation states that the total value is over $80,000. Courses run between 9 and 12 months. The award is not deferrable, so applicants must be ready to accept if offered, usually in late December.

Who Can Apply for Churchill Scholarship 2026
Eligibility is narrow and non-negotiable.
For the 16 STEM Churchill Scholarships, you must:
- Be a citizen of the United States (native-born or naturalized)
- Be enrolled at a participating institution and due to graduate in the same academic year as the deadline, or have graduated from one of those institutions within the 12 months before the deadline
- Hold a bachelor’s degree by the time the Scholarship begins
- Be nominated by your institution (each school may nominate up to two students)
There is no published minimum GPA. In practice, competitive applicants usually show very high STEM grades, often 3.7 or above and frequently near 3.9. More important than a number is a record of original research.
The Kanders Churchill Scholarship in science policy is different. Applicants need a STEM major or minor from any US college or university, not only participating institutions. There is no time limit since graduation. They apply for the Cambridge Master’s in Public Policy and indicate interest in Kanders on that application. Up to two awards are available each year, subject to funding.
Programs of Study at Cambridge
The Scholarship supports a one-year MPhil (Master of Philosophy) or MASt (Master of Advanced Study). The MASt, also called Part III, is available in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and theoretical physics, and mathematical statistics. It is course-heavy, with the option of a research essay in place of one exam.
Most other Scholars take a research MPhil: full-time lab or group work, a thesis, and a viva. A year of independent Master’s research is uncommon in the United States. That is the point.
Eligible fields include astronomy, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, engineering (including energy technologies, machine learning and machine intelligence, nuclear energy, and structural engineering), genetics, materials science, medical science, physics, plant sciences, psychology, veterinary science, and others listed on the Foundation’s Programs of Study page.
Important constraints:
- Your course must be on the eligible list, or you must get written permission from the Foundation.
- For most research degrees you should show correspondence with a Cambridge supervisor. Exceptions include the MASt in mathematics and the MPhil in Advanced Computer Science.
- Training-style “Advanced Study” biological sciences courses aimed at students with little research experience are a poor fit.
- You must list Churchill College as your first college choice on the Cambridge application.
If a lab or course is not listed, email info@churchillscholarship.org before you assume it is ineligible. Course offerings change, and the Foundation has approved less obvious placements when a supervisor and research plan make sense.
How Selection Works
A committee of former Churchill Scholars reads the files. An offer is not made until after an informal telephone interview.
The criteria are:
- Outstanding academic achievement, especially in STEM courses and the major
- Proven talent in research: substantial lab work, internships, or independent mathematics
- Outstanding personal qualities, described as “jagged edges”
“Jagged edges” is the Foundation’s phrase for depth over polish. You do not need to look well-rounded. You do not need campus leadership titles. You do need intense involvement in a few things that reveal how you think. Outside interests count, but no single hobby is favored.
The Foundation also warns against generic, AI-smoothed prose. Committees have started seeing empty phrases (“deeply committed,” “rigorous courses,” “ambitious goals”). Specific work, specific questions, and a specific reason Cambridge is the right next lab travel farther than adjectives.
How to Apply for the Churchill Scholarship 2026
You cannot apply as a free agent for the 16 STEM awards. Start with your campus fellowships office.
A practical sequence:
- Confirm your school is a participating institution and learn the internal deadline. Campus dates often fall in August, September, or early October.
- Choose an eligible Cambridge course. Read department pages. Contact potential supervisors early for research MPhils. Mathematics applicants should read the Foundation’s guide to Part III before choosing the MASt.
- Complete the Churchill online application when the portal opens (typically May). Required pieces include a one-page proposed research or program of study, a two-page academic and research history, transcripts, and supervisor correspondence where required.
- Request four academic letters from people who know your STEM work. If you researched away from your home campus, include at least one external letter.
- Apply separately to the University of Cambridge for an MPhil or MASt and rank Churchill College first. Because Cambridge uses rolling admissions, the Foundation strongly suggests applying by the Gates Cambridge deadline, usually the second Wednesday in October.
- Submit through your institution so the nomination and institutional letter of support reach the Foundation by Monday, November 2, 2026, 5 p.m. Eastern.
Results usually go to applicants in late December. Public announcements follow in early February.
Kanders applicants skip the Foundation portal. They apply to Cambridge for the Master’s in Public Policy, name Churchill College first, and state interest in the Kanders award on the statement of interest. The Kanders deadline tracks the Gates Cambridge deadline.
Churchill Versus Rhodes, Marshall, Gates, and NSF GRFP
Applicants often run several competitions at once. Timing matters.
- If you accept a Rhodes or Marshall, you must withdraw from Churchill.
- Gates Cambridge decisions come later. Some students do a Churchill MPhil year and then a Gates-funded PhD.
- The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship generally cannot be used at a foreign university. Many Churchill winners decline NSF for the year and reapply later; several succeed.
- Churchill is non-deferrable. You will likely need to decide before most US PhD and MD programs release results. Past Scholars report they can often defer graduate admission. If you are not prepared to take the year, do not use one of your school’s two nomination slots.
Students finishing a combined bachelor’s and master’s in the same year should talk to the Foundation before mentioning the master’s on the Cambridge form. That detail can affect later NSF eligibility.

Who This Scholarship Is For
The Churchill Scholarship is a poor match if you mainly want a prestigious line on a résumé or a taught “gap year” Master’s. It is a strong match if you already have research you can describe in detail, you can name the questions you want to push next, and a year without course overload would let you take a scientific risk.
That is the consistent theme in Scholar testimonials: intellectual freedom, ownership, and a year spent on work that felt meaningful rather than merely completable. For the right applicant, Cambridge becomes a laboratory, not a trophy.
