If you have been searching for a realistic way to study at one of the world’s leading science and technology universities, Imperial Inspires Scholarships should be near the top of your list. Imperial College London has launched a large, university-wide funding programme aimed at talented international students who want to study engineering, science, medicine, or business in London.
For 2027 entry, Imperial is offering at least 300 scholarships worth £15,000 per year. That is not a one-off discount. Successful students receive the award for every year of their eligible course. On a four-year undergraduate degree, that can add up to £60,000 in support toward tuition and living costs.
This guide explains what the Imperial Inspires Scholarships are, who can apply, how the money is paid, and the exact steps you should take once applications open in September 2026.

Overview of Imperial Inspires Scholarships
Imperial Inspires is a new flagship scholarship programme from Imperial College London. The university created it to help outstanding students from around the world access an Imperial education and to build a more diverse community in science, technology, engineering, medicine, and business (STEMB).
The official programme page describes Imperial Inspires as support for “talented students from around the globe.” For autumn 2027 entry, the first wave is reserved for international students who pay the Overseas rate of tuition. Imperial has already said it plans to expand the scheme to UK students in later years.

The scholarships sit across four faculties:
- Faculty of Engineering
- Faculty of Natural Sciences
- Faculty of Medicine
- Imperial Business School
Not every course in those faculties is guaranteed to carry an Imperial Inspires award. Imperial will publish the full list of participating departments and courses on its official scholarship page and scholarship search tool. Check those pages before you apply.
Why This Scholarship Matters
Overseas tuition at Imperial is high. Many undergraduate and master’s programmes charge international fees well above £40,000 a year, and London living costs add another substantial layer. A £15,000 annual award does not usually cover the whole bill, but it is large enough to change the calculation for many families. On a three-year course, the total value is £45,000. On a four-year course, it is £60,000.
Imperial is also positioning the scheme as more than a fee discount. The university links Imperial Inspires to its wider strategy of attracting global talent and removing barriers that stop capable students from studying STEMB subjects. That matters if you are writing a scholarship essay: selectors are looking for academic strength and for students who can contribute to Imperial’s community of future innovators.
Imperial Inspires Scholarship Benefits in Detail
Successful applicants receive at least £15,000 per year for the full duration of their course. Imperial states that the money provides “meaningful support towards your tuition fees and living costs.”
Key points from the official terms and conditions:
- The award is paid for each year of the eligible course.
- Repeat years of study are not funded.
- The scholarship is not paid during an interruption of studies.
- How the £15,000 is split between tuition and a living stipend is decided by the faculty. That split will appear on your award letter.
- The tuition portion is paid directly to Imperial.
- Any stipend portion is paid into a UK bank account, normally on the 7th of each month once you are fully registered.
- New students should budget for initial living costs until a UK bank account is set up and the first payment arrives.
This is a partial scholarship, not a fully funded package covering all tuition, flights, visas, and living costs. You should still plan how you will cover the remaining fees, the Immigration Health Surcharge, visa costs, and London rent.

Who Is Eligible for Imperial Inspires Scholarships?
For 2027 entry, you must meet all of the following:
- Be an international student paying the Overseas rate of tuition
- Apply for a full-time undergraduate course, or a selected full-time postgraduate taught course
- Apply to a course that offers an Imperial Inspires scholarship in Engineering, Natural Sciences, Medicine, or Imperial Business School
- Meet the minimum academic entry requirements for that course
Home-fee students are not eligible for the 2027 round. PhD and other research degrees are not part of this programme. Part-time and online courses are outside the scope described on the official pages.
If your fee status changes from Overseas to Home during the year, the scholarship ends. Awards also cannot be deferred. If you defer your place, the scholarship is withdrawn and you must apply again in the admissions cycle for your new year of entry.
How to Apply for Imperial Inspires Scholarships
You do not start with a separate public scholarship form. The process is tied to your course application.
Step 1. Choose an eligible full-time course and submit your admissions application after applications open in September 2026.
- Undergraduates apply through UCAS. Imperial’s institution code is I50.
- Postgraduate taught applicants apply through My Imperial.

Step 2. If an Imperial Inspires scholarship is available for your course and you meet the minimum entry and eligibility requirements, Imperial will invite you to complete an additional essay question from September 2026. That invitation is issued through the admissions portal.
Step 3. Submit the scholarship statement by the deadline given in your invitation. The scholarship application is linked to, but separate from, the admissions decision. Applying for the scholarship does not change whether you receive an offer.
Imperial has said it will publish more detail on participating departments, assessment, and process on the official page. Recheck that page before you write your essay.
Application Timeline and Deadlines
Treat the course deadline as the real deadline. If you miss the admissions window, you cannot enter the scholarship process.
Undergraduate 2027 entry (UCAS):
- 12 May 2026: you can start preparing a UCAS application
- 1 September 2026: completed applications can be submitted
- 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time: deadline for MBBS Medicine and Graduate Entry Medicine
- 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time: equal-consideration deadline for most other undergraduate courses
- Mid-April 2027: undergraduate Imperial Inspires scholarships awarded
Postgraduate taught 2027 entry:
- Course applications open from September 2026
- Scholarship assessment uses the admissions application and academic merit or potential
- Awards are made in each admissions round, on the decision date of the round you applied in
Apply early. Competitive master’s programmes fill by later rounds, and a late course application can mean a late or missed scholarship decision.

How Winners Are Selected
Imperial is explicit: the award is discretionary and highly competitive. Not every eligible applicant will receive it.
Selection differs slightly by level:
- Undergraduate: assessed on the admissions application plus the statement on the scholarship form
- Postgraduate taught: assessed on academic merit and potential using the admissions application
That means grades, subject fit, predicted or completed results, references, and the quality of your written statement all matter. For undergraduates, the extra essay is your chance to show more than exam scores. Use it to explain what you want to build, why Imperial is the right place, and how you will use an Imperial education beyond graduation.
Practical advice for a stronger application:
- Apply to a course that actually participates in Imperial Inspires
- Meet, and if possible exceed, the published entry requirements
- Submit a complete UCAS or My Imperial application early
- Write a specific essay. Generic lines about “changing the world” are weak. Concrete projects, research interests, and leadership examples are stronger
- Keep your personal statement and scholarship essay consistent
- Do not wait for a scholarship decision before applying for a visa plan or other funding. The award is partial
Conditions You Must Know Before You Accept
Read the terms before you rely on the money. Important rules include:
- Satisfactory academic progress is required. On courses longer than 11 months, eligibility is reviewed each year.
- The scholarship stops if you withdraw, interrupt, or are not registered.
- If you repeat a year, payment is postponed until you progress.
- You may be asked to thank donors, write progress updates, or attend events.
- Holding another full scholarship that already covers tuition and living costs can make you ineligible to stack awards.
- Multiple partial awards are reviewed case by case and living-cost support is capped against Imperial’s published London cost-of-living figures.

Will UK Students Be Able to Apply?
Not in the first 2027 cohort. Imperial has stated that further Imperial Inspires Scholarships for UK students will launch in the years ahead. Home undergraduates should instead look at existing support such as the Imperial Bursary and other awards listed in the scholarship search.
What the Scholarship Does Not Cover
To avoid disappointment, be clear about the gaps:
- It is not a full-ride scholarship
- It does not automatically cover flights, the UK student visa, or the Immigration Health Surcharge
- It does not fund PhD study
- It does not fund repeat years or time away from the course
- It cannot be deferred with your place
Use Imperial’s cost-of-living information and official fee pages to build a full budget before you accept an offer.
Final Checklist
- Confirm you will be assessed as an Overseas-fee student
- Shortlist full-time undergraduate or selected master’s courses in the four participating faculties
- Watch the official Imperial Inspires page for the participating-course list
- Prepare UCAS or My Imperial materials before September 2026
- Submit the course application as early as you can
- Complete the invited scholarship essay with evidence, not slogans
- Plan additional funding for the remainder of fees and London living costs
- Re-read the terms if you receive an award letter
Imperial Inspires Scholarships will attract a large number of applicants because the brand is strong, the award is renewable each year, and 300 places is a serious number by UK university standards. The students who win will be the ones who treat this as a two-stage process: first a competitive Imperial admission, then a focused scholarship statement that proves they belong in that cohort.
