York University Presidential Scholarship 2027: The $180,000 Award International Students Overlook

·

Most international applicants search for “full scholarships in Canada” and then apply only to the famous names. That is how they miss one of the strongest undergraduate awards at a major Toronto university: the York University Presidential Scholarship, officially called the President’s International Scholarship of Excellence (PISE).

It is not a small entrance discount. York values it at $180,000 CAD over four years, paid as $45,000 per year. Recipients are known as President’s International Scholars and are selected from high school applicants around the world who combine strong grades with leadership and community involvement.

If you are aiming at York for a first undergraduate degree, this is the award to plan around first. Automatic entrance scholarships still exist, but PISE is the flagship.

Scholarship Summary

What the York University Presidential Scholarship Actually Is

York University is a large public university in Toronto. The presidential award is reserved for international high school applicants entering the first year of a four-year undergraduate degree.

Official wording is consistent on the core idea: the scholarship goes to students who show academic excellence, volunteer or extracurricular commitment, and leadership. Recipients are chosen from a range of world regions, not from one country only.

Key facts applicants should lock in:

  • Official name: President’s International Scholarship of Excellence
  • Common search name: York University Presidential Scholarship
  • Value: $45,000 per year, up to $180,000 over four years
  • Level: undergraduate only (not a master’s or PhD scholarship)
  • Competition: a select number of awards each year; many independent listings report up to 20
  • Payment: applied directly to your York student account for tuition and fees

International undergraduate tuition at York is commonly in the low-to-mid $30,000s CAD for many programs, and higher for fields such as business and engineering. A $45,000 annual award can therefore cover full tuition in many programs and still leave a contribution toward other costs, depending on the faculty you enter. It is a high-value tuition-focused award, not an automatic “everything paid, including rent and flights” package.

Why This Award Is More Than Money

York markets a “President’s International Scholars Advantage,” and that extras package is part of the reason the award stands out.

  • A peer community of scholars from different countries and faculties
  • Mentors from the start of first year
  • Complimentary registration for York’s annual Career Ready Conference each year
  • Networking with senior leaders and professors reserved for international scholars

That matters in a city the size of Toronto. A large campus can feel anonymous. This award is designed to put a small, high-performing international cohort inside that campus with people who already know the system.

Recent scholar profiles on York’s site include students from India, Pakistan, Trinidad and Tobago, Honduras, the UAE, Barbados, Mongolia, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Uganda, across business, science, engineering, health, Glendon, liberal arts, and the arts. The pattern is global, not regional.

Who Is Eligible for York University Presidential Scholarship

You should only invest time in this application if you match the official profile.

You generally need to:

  • Be a high school student entering first year of an undergraduate degree at York
  • Hold international student status and be charged international tuition fees
  • Show strong academics, leadership, volunteer work, and extracurricular involvement
  • Have a minimum final admission average of 80% (A) or equivalent
  • Be officially nominated by a guidance counsellor, principal, or senior school official
  • Stay within the school nomination cap: maximum two nominations per school per year

York also treats this as a direct-from-high-school award in its incoming-student materials: typically no previous college or university study, and application within a short window after high school graduation. Students do not need an offer of admission before they submit the scholarship form, but they do need to apply for admission first so York can issue a reference number.

Financial need may be considered. It is not a need-only bursary, but the application asks for a funding profile, so money is part of the file.

Important restriction: if your immigration status changes and you become exempt from international fees, York can reduce the award to domestic-fee value. The scholarship also cannot be stacked with York’s automatic international entrance scholarships. If you win a higher-value prestigious award, you receive the higher one, not both.

Scholarship Benefits and Renewal Rules

Annual value: up to $45,000 CAD. Maximum total: $180,000 over four years Renewal: additional three years of full-time study, or until degree completion, whichever comes first

The award-search description used by York states renewal depends on completing at least 24 credits each Fall/Winter session with a minimum sessional GPA of 6.0. Funds are applied to tuition and other amounts owing on the student account; they are not handed over as unrestricted cash.

Budget the rest of your year honestly:

  • Residence and meal plan
  • UHIP and student health coverage
  • Books and supplies
  • Local transportation
  • The $2,000 non-refundable acceptance deposit York requires of undergraduate international students, including scholarship recipients

York is explicit that international scholarships are limited and that students should be prepared to support themselves beyond any award. That is not marketing fluff. Treat PISE as a powerful tuition offset, then prove you can fund the gap.

Application Deadline and Timeline

As published on York’s current PISE application guide:

  • Student application deadline: January 27, 2027, 11:59 p.m. EST
  • Nomination and reference deadline: February 4, 2027, 11:59 p.m. EST

Some York pages still describe applicants planning to start in Fall 2026, while the same guide says first-year entry in Fall 2027. That inconsistency is on the official site. Use the dated deadlines above, then re-check the live pages before you submit. In recent cycles the international scholarship form opened in early November. In August 2026, the guide also notes that the scholarship application is closed between cycles.

Practical sequence:

  1. Apply for undergraduate admission early enough to receive your York reference number.
  2. Complete the PISE / international scholarship application by the student deadline.
  3. Make sure your nominator submits the nomination and reference by the second deadline.
  4. Keep admission documents marked received in your York file.

How to Apply

York’s process is application-based. There is no automatic consideration for PISE.

Step 1: Apply to York. Use York’s undergraduate application if you are applying only to York, or OUAC if you are applying to multiple Ontario universities. International applicants commonly use the York application at https://form.apps06.yorku.ca/en/uaform. Admission details are at https://futurestudents.yorku.ca/requirements/apply.

Step 2: Get your York reference number. York says this number is issued after the admission application is received. You need it to open the scholarship form.

Step 3: Complete the scholarship application. Current official materials point applicants to the PISE process and the international scholarship application. The award listing still references https://futurestudents.yorku.ca/international-scholarship-application. The dedicated award pages are:

Step 4: Submit the required package. York’s current student guide asks for:

  • A personal statement of up to 500 words on goals, leadership, volunteer work, and extracurriculars
  • Up to 3 extracurricular or community activities
  • Up to 3 previous awards
  • Nominator contact details
  • A financial profile of funding available for the next three to four years
  • An optional extra reference on community involvement

Your school official then receives a York email and must complete the nomination plus a reference letter, ideally on school letterhead, covering academics and community contribution. Schools may nominate only two students. If you are one of five strong candidates in your school, the nomination is already a competition.

What Makes a Competitive File

Grades get you past the 80% floor. They do not win the award by themselves.

Selection readers are looking for a student who will represent York internationally and stay strong for four years. A sharper file usually has:

  • A clear academic story, not a list of prizes
  • Leadership with evidence: what changed because you were there
  • Volunteer work that lasted, rather than a one-day event
  • A personal statement that sounds like one person, not a template
  • A nominator who can write specifics
  • A realistic funding plan

Keep the statement tight. 500 words is short. Open with the work you have already done, then connect it to what you will study at York. Avoid generic lines about “changing the world.” Name the community, the role, the result.

If you are not nominated, you can still be considered for other international entrance awards. Unsuccessful PISE applicants may be reviewed for other international scholarships, including faculty leadership awards where relevant.

If You Do Not Win PISE

Do not treat this as the only York option.

For Fall 2026 / Winter 2027, York also lists automatic international entrance awards based on final admission average, with no separate application:

  • York International Scholarship of Distinction: up to $37,500 over four years for very high averages
  • York International Merit Award: up to $25,000 over four years
  • York International Entrance Award: $5,000 one-time
  • York International Transfer Award: $2,500 one-time for eligible transfer students

These can be combined with many faculty awards, but not with prestigious scholarships such as PISE. There are also faculty awards, including Glendon’s International Excellence Scholarship and the York Science Scholars Award. Review the full lists here:

After you enroll, continuing awards and bursaries run through York’s FAAS process. That is a different system from this entrance scholarship.

Protect Yourself While You Apply

York applies scholarship funds to your student account. The university will not ask for your banking password, one-time codes, or tuition payment through a random text, WhatsApp chat, or unofficial email. If a message pressures you to “confirm the scholarship” by paying a fee or sharing passport scans outside York portals, treat it as fraud.

Use only York domains, MyFile or the official application forms, and published contacts such as study@yorku.ca or the Future Students pages linked above.

Final Checklist

  • Confirm you are an international high school applicant to a four-year York undergraduate program
  • Apply for admission early and save your reference number
  • Secure one of the two school nominations
  • Draft a 500-word statement with proof of leadership
  • Submit the student form by January 27, 2027, 11:59 p.m. EST
  • Confirm the nominator finishes by February 4, 2027, 11:59 p.m. EST
  • Re-read the official PISE pages the week you apply, because dates and intake-year wording can change

The York University Presidential Scholarship is competitive because the value is real. Students who treat it like a last-minute form usually lose to students who planned the nomination, the statement, and the admission file months earlier. Start with the official pages, then build a file that a principal can defend in a reference letter.
