What You Will Do and Learn
Under the guidance of mentor Scott Sattler (scott.sattler@usda.gov), a Research Molecular Biologist with USDA-ARS and adjunct associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, fellows will apply genomics, genetics, biochemistry, and physiology approaches. The work builds skills in analyzing gene function and biochemical pathways linked to plant growth, biomass composition, and crop improvement.
Specific learning objectives include:
- Understanding the genetic, biochemical, and physiological mechanisms controlling lignin, starch, and flowering traits in sorghum.
- Gaining hands-on experience with multi-disciplinary tools to study genes involved in crop trait regulation.
- Developing expertise in applying plant genetics to improve livestock digestibility and bioenergy conversion efficiency.
- Building collaborative research experience across plant science and crop improvement programs.

Eligibility and Preferred Qualifications
