Scholarship Overview

Each year, ANU offers the University Research Scholarship to outstanding HDR students. This scholarship is available through two annual central scholarship rounds (Round 1 and Round 2), which also include the Australian Government Research Training Program (AGRTP) and other centrally managed scholarships.

Scholarship Benefits

The University Research Scholarship offers several substantial benefits:

  • Annual Stipend: $36,652, disbursed fortnightly.
  • Duration: 3.5 years, with a possible extension of 6 months.
  • Additional Support:
    • Travel and removal allowances for those relocating to Canberra.
    • Thesis allowance.
    • Dependent child allowance (for international students only).
    • Paid medical, maternity, and parental leave.

Scholarship Rounds:

  • Round 1 (International Applicants): Closes on August 31 each year, with commencement by March 31 the following year.
  • Round 1 (Domestic Applicants): Closes on October 31 each year, with commencement by March 31 the following year.
  • Round 2 (Both International and Domestic Applicants): Closes on April 15 each year, with commencement by August 31 the same year.

Round 1 is divided into separate deadlines for international and domestic candidates, while Round 2 is smaller and considers both types of applicants simultaneously.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the University Research Scholarship, you must:

  1. Be either a domestic or an international student enrolled in an accredited HDR course at ANU.
  2. Have achieved a minimum of Honours (H1) or its equivalent in your previous studies.

Selection Process

The selection process is rigorous and involves each ANU College forming a selection committee to evaluate and rank all eligible H1 (or equivalent) applicants. Your overall ranking will be based on:

  • Academic record.
  • Research potential, including support from your prospective supervisor and the location of your research.
  • Referee reports.
  • English language competency.
  • Comparison with other applications received in the same scholarship round.

How to Apply

Applying for the University Research Scholarship is straightforward:

  1. Application for Admission: When you apply for admission to a HDR program at ANU, you can indicate your interest in the University Research Scholarship along with other scholarships.
  2. Current Candidates: If you are a current student who has completed less than one year of full-time study, you need to fill out the ‘Request for a current ANU student to be considered for a HDR scholarship’ form.

No separate application is required for the scholarship unless you are a current candidate applying through the specific form mentioned.
