You submit one free application. If you are named a Finalist, you can rank up to 15 partner colleges. On Match Day, you may be admitted early to the highest school on your list that also chooses you, and that school awards a guaranteed Match Scholarship for four years.

A top college is not a fantasy for students who have already been doing hard work with limited resources. The Match is built for that exact student.
What the Match Scholarship Actually Covers
The official language is unusually clear. All Match Scholarship packages have:
- No parental contribution
- No student loans
Coverage includes:
- Tuition and fees
- Housing and food
- Books and supplies
- Travel expenses
The “over $360,000” figure comes from four years of full cost of attendance at many partner schools. Exact value depends on the college. A school with a $90,000 annual cost of attendance can easily exceed that number over four years. Caltech, for example, has described a Match package valued at more than $325,000.
That is why this is different from a typical merit award that knocks $10,000 off tuition and still leaves a family with loans.

Who Should Apply for QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship
QuestBridge reviews applications holistically. There is no official GPA cutoff and no required test score. Still, successful applicants usually look like this:
- High school seniors planning to enroll in college the fall after graduation
- Attending high school in the United States, or U.S. citizens/permanent residents living abroad
- Primarily A’s in the most challenging courses available
- Strong writing and intellectual curiosity
- Often in the top 5–10% of their class
- Household income typically under about $65,000 for a family of four, with limited assets
- Often eligible for free or reduced-price lunch
- Evidence of resilience, integrity, and motivation
International students living outside the United States are not eligible. Students who are undocumented or have DACA status and attend high school in the U.S. can apply; individual colleges set their own policies after that.
You do not have to be first-generation. You do not need a perfect SAT. You do need a record that shows you used the opportunities you had.
Typical reported score ranges among Finalists who submit tests are roughly SAT 1290–1460 or ACT 27–33. Tests are optional for the QuestBridge application itself, though some partner colleges still have their own testing policies.

If you match, you are admitted early with the full scholarship. If you do not match, Finalists can still use QuestBridge Regular Decision to apply to partner colleges with no application fees and generous need-based aid.

How the Match Works, Step by Step
1. Submit one free application. The application asks for academics, activities, household finances, a writing section, two teacher recommendations from core subjects, a counselor School Report, and your transcript. Unofficial transcripts and unofficial score reports are accepted at this stage.

2. Rank up to 15 partner colleges. Colleges do not see where you ranked them. You are considered for a match at the highest school on your list that also wants to match with you. In a recent cycle, 68% of matched students landed at one of their top five schools.
3. Wait for Finalist decisions in mid-October. If you become a Finalist and ranked colleges, those schools receive your application.
4. Submit Match Requirements by November 1. These often include the CSS Profile, FAFSA, tax documents, and school-specific supplements. The more schools you rank, the more paperwork you have. Start early.

5. Learn your result on Match Day, December 1. A match is binding at nearly every partner college. MIT is the exception.

Always confirm the current list before you rank: College Partners
Do not rank only the most famous names. Rank schools you would attend with excitement if they offered you a full ride. A binding match to a school you treated as a throwaway is a serious problem.
The Binding Rule, and Why It Matters
If you rank colleges and match, you are expected to enroll at that college the following fall. That commitment is why colleges will lock in a no-loan, no-parent-contribution package so early.
If you rank any QuestBridge partner, including MIT, you generally cannot apply Early Decision or Restrictive Early Action to other colleges. Non-binding options at public universities, rolling admission, military academies, and some special programs may still be allowed. Read the current early application policy before you rank.
If you do not rank colleges, you will not be considered for the Match Scholarship. You can still become a Finalist and apply through QuestBridge Regular Decision.

How to Build a Competitive Application for QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship
Treat this like a serious admissions file, not a form.
- Ask two teachers from core academic classes early. Give them context about your responsibilities at home, not just your GPA.
- Write specifically. QuestBridge gives extra space because partner colleges want to see how you succeeded despite constraint. Vague “I worked hard” essays disappear.
- Report finances carefully. Have 2025 tax returns, W-2s, and asset records ready. QuestBridge does not require document uploads with the initial application, but colleges will verify later.
- List work, caregiving, and household responsibility as real activities. Admissions officers understand that not every strong student had time for five clubs.
- Research each ranked college. Match Requirements and testing rules differ.

What Happens If You Do Not Match
Not matching is common and not a rejection from college. Finalists can apply to partner schools through QuestBridge Regular Decision, often with fee waivers and strong need-based aid. Many partners meet 100% of demonstrated need even outside the Match.
You should still apply to a balanced list of non-QuestBridge colleges. Partner schools remain extremely selective.

Why This Deadline Is Different
October 1 is early compared with Regular Decision, but that is the point. One application can put you in front of as many as 15 of the country’s most selective colleges with a full-ride offer on the table. Families who wait until winter are competing for ordinary aid packages, not a locked four-year Match Scholarship.
If the academic profile and the income profile both sound like yours, do not talk yourself out of applying because the colleges look famous. QuestBridge exists because those colleges asked for a better way to find students who never saw themselves on those campuses.
