One scholarship. Four years of full tuition. A living allowance. And a direct line into the world that designs championship-winning cars.
That is the promise of the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Scholarship 2027 at Imperial College London. It is not a generic university bursary. It is a partnership award between Imperial’s Department of Aeronautics and the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, created to open motorsport and aerospace pathways for students who are still under-represented in those industries.
If you are applying for 2027 entry to MEng Aeronautical Engineering and you hold (or expect) Home fee status, this is one of the most valuable undergraduate awards Imperial currently lists. Only one student will receive it. The UCAS deadline is 13 January 2027. Missing that date ends the process before a scholarship form even exists.
This guide explains what the award actually covers, who can apply, how the process works, and what you should do now if you want a realistic shot.

What the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Scholarship Is
The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Scholarship supports one new undergraduate student on Imperial’s MEng Aeronautical Engineering programme (UCAS code H401) for the 2027/2028 academic year. It is open to prospective, full-time Home students only. Current Imperial students cannot apply.

The official purpose is straightforward: increase opportunities into motorsport for under-represented groups, while backing students who want to study the engineering that sits behind aircraft, spacecraft, and high-performance vehicles. Aeronautical engineering is not a side interest for an F1 team. Aerodynamics, structures, materials, and computational methods are core to on-track performance. That is why the team funded the award in the first place.
When the partnership was announced, Team Principal Toto Wolff said aeronautical engineering “play[s] a crucial role in on-track performance” and that the team wanted to help talented young people find routes into a demanding specialism. The scholar is not promised a job at Brackley. They are promised funded study at one of the world’s leading engineering universities, plus contact with people who already work at that level.
Why Mercedes AMG F1 Scholarship Award Stands Out
Imperial’s Home undergraduate fee for 2027 entry is expected to sit at the government cap of £10,050 a year, subject to parliamentary approval. Four years of fees is therefore more than £40,000 before living costs in London. The scholarship removes that fee bill and adds a living allowance so the holder can focus on the course rather than stacking paid work around labs and design projects.
Money is only part of the story. The Department of Aeronautics states that throughout the degree the scholar will have the chance to meet Mercedes team members and gain expert insight that supplements formal teaching. For a student aiming at Formula One, aerospace, or high-end mechanical design, that access is difficult to buy.
Competition will be intense for a simple reason: there is one award. Imperial’s Aeronautical Engineering course is already selective. Recent published figures put applications-to-places around 11:1. The scholarship sits on top of that filter. You first have to win an offer. Then you have to win the award. Then you must make Imperial your firm UCAS choice.
Mercedes AMG F1 Scholarship Benefits at a Glance
- Full tuition fees for four academic years taught full-time at Imperial
- A living allowance for those four years
- One award available for 2027/28
- Opportunity to meet Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS team members during the degree
- Industry insight intended to sit alongside Aeronautics teaching
- Available on the standard four-year MEng and, with limits, on the five-year year-abroad and year-in-industry variants
Important limit: Imperial offers five-year routes (MEng Aeronautical Engineering with a year abroad, and with a year in industry). Those courses can be supported, but funding is only available for the four academic years taught full-time at Imperial. The extra year is not fully funded by this scholarship.
Imperial has not published the exact living-allowance figure on the 2027/28 scholarship page. Treat “living allowance” as a confirmed benefit, not as a named cash amount, until the department sends the offer-holder paperwork.

Who Can Apply for Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Scholarship 2027
Eligibility is tightly defined. You need all of the course and fee conditions, plus at least one of the background routes below.
Course and status requirements
- New entrant for 2027 (not a current student on the course)
- Home tuition fee status
- Full-time study
- Application to MEng Aeronautical Engineering, UCAS H401
- Offer of a place for 2027 entry
- If selected, Imperial must be your firm UCAS choice
Background routes (meet at least one)
You may be eligible if you:
- Are, or identify as, female; or
- Are a student of Black heritage matching one of the following (or the equivalent category in the relevant application system):
- Black – African
- Black – Caribbean
- Black – Other
- Mixed – White and Black African
- Mixed – White and Black Caribbean
- Other Mixed background including Black African, Black Caribbean or Other Black background; or
- Qualify for Imperial’s contextual admissions schemes
Contextual eligibility is assessed from information on your UCAS form. Typical flags include care experience, a home postcode in England’s most deprived IMD quintile, current or recent free school meals, and certain combinations of low-participation neighbourhood plus school or first-generation status. Imperial does not use later updates after the application deadline to change that flag. Check the official contextual page before you assume you qualify.
This is a Home-student award. Overseas-fee applicants should look at other Imperial schemes, including Imperial Inspires, rather than this scholarship.
The Course Behind the Scholarship
The award is attached to one department and one core course: MEng Aeronautical Engineering in the Department of Aeronautics at South Kensington.
The four-year MEng is designed to cover the breadth of aerospace engineering plus the computational and analytical skills used in industries such as motorsport. That overlap is the reason Mercedes funded the scholarship in Aeronautics rather than in a generic engineering pot.
Key course facts for 2027 entry:
- Qualification: MEng
- Duration: 4 years (plus optional 5-year abroad/industry routes)
- Start: October 2027
- UCAS code: H401

How to Apply for the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Scholarship 2027
There is no public “apply now” button that sits apart from the course application. The sequence is course first, offer second, scholarship form third.
- Apply through UCAS for H401 MEng Aeronautical Engineering by 18:00 GMT on 13 January 2027.
Use Imperial’s step-by-step undergraduate apply guide if you have not used UCAS before. - Sit the ESAT. Aeronautical Engineering requires the Engineering and Science Admissions Test. Imperial accepts the October 2026 or January 2027 sitting. There is no stated advantage to one window over the other, but you must sit the modules the Department of Aeronautics specifies. Check current ESAT instructions on Imperial’s admissions pages before you book.
- Receive an offer for 2027 entry. The department assesses predicted grades, ESAT performance, the UCAS form, and interview performance holistically.
- Wait for offer-holder communications. Imperial will send scholarship details, an application form, and information on other funding. That form is the actual scholarship application.
- If you are selected, make Imperial your firm choice on UCAS. The award terms require this. An insurance-only decision will not keep the scholarship.
Department contact for questions: aero.admissions@imperial.ac.uk
Dates You Should Put in a Calendar Now
- ESAT window 1: 12–16 October 2026 (different dates in China, Hong Kong and Macau)
- ESAT window 2: 4–8 January 2027 (6 January 2027 in China, Hong Kong and Macau)
- UCAS and scholarship gateway deadline: 13 January 2027, 18:00 GMT
- Course start: October 2027
The scholarship page repeats the same deadline in two places: 13/01/2027 and 13 January 2027, 18:00. Treat that as the hard stop for the UCAS application that makes you eligible to be considered later.
How to Build a Competitive Application
The university will not publish a scoring rubric for this award. You can still control the parts that matter.
Make H401 look intentional. A personal statement that could equally support any engineering course is a weak motorsport-and-aerospace statement. Show why flight, vehicles, fluids, structures, or performance engineering is the point, not a backup.
Treat ESAT as a gate, not a formality. An offer is required before the scholarship form appears. A late or incomplete test plan can end the process in January.
Use the UCAS reference and contextual fields accurately. If you qualify through Black heritage, gender identity, or contextual flags, the relevant data must already be on the application. Do not assume the department can reconstruct missing background details after deadline.
If you receive the form, write it as a funding case, not a second personal statement. Expect questions about background, motivation for Aeronautics, and what you would do with access to Mercedes insight. Keep claims specific and checkable.
Have a funding plan that does not depend on winning the only available award. One scholarship means most eligible offer-holders will not get it.
Other Imperial Funding Worth Checking in Parallel
Eligible Home applicants should also review:
- Imperial Bursary for household-income support
- Faculty of Engineering awards listed on the Aeronautics scholarships page
- Presidential Scholarship for Students of Black Heritage in years when it is open
- Cowrie Foundation Scholarship where criteria overlap
- Student Finance tuition and maintenance loans
Do not assume these stack in full. Some Imperial awards cap combined support. Read each scheme’s terms.
International applicants should ignore this award and start with Imperial Inspires and department MSc scholarships if they are applying at postgraduate level instead.
Frequently Missed Details
Is it open to Master’s or PhD applicants? No. The 2027/28 listing is undergraduate only.
Can a current first-year student switch onto it? No. New entrants only.
Does it fund a year in industry or a year abroad? Only the four full-time taught years at Imperial.
Is there a separate deadline after UCAS? The public deadline is the UCAS date. The scholarship form deadline will be sent to offer-holders. Do not wait for that email before applying to the course.
Does meeting eligibility guarantee consideration? You must also hold an offer and complete the later form. Eligibility is the entrance ticket, not the award.
Final Check Before You Apply for Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Scholarship 2027
If you can answer “yes” to these, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Scholarship 2027 is worth building your autumn around:
- You want MEng Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial, not a loosely related course
- You are a Home-fee prospective student for 2027
- You meet at least one published background route
- You can sit ESAT and submit UCAS by 13 January 2027, 18:00 GMT
- You are prepared to make Imperial your firm choice if selected
Start with the official listing, not a summary post: Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Scholarship 2027/28. Then apply to H401, book ESAT, and keep aero.admissions@imperial.ac.uk for questions the public pages do not answer.
One place. One scholar. The window is already marked on Imperial’s calendar. The only part still open is whether your application is in it.
