Eligible MSc Programmes for Department of Aeronautics MSc Scholarship 2027
Only three taught programmes in the Department of Aeronautics qualify. Applying to a different Imperial MSc — even another engineering degree — will not put you in this pool.
- MSc Advanced Aeronautical Engineering — multidisciplinary aircraft technologies, environmental impact, and an individual research project. Typical minimum: a 2:1, preferably a First, in aerospace or mechanical engineering with fluid and structural dynamics. Start: October 2027. Applications for this course open on 30 September 2026.
- MSc Advanced Computational Methods for Aeronautics, Flow Management and Fluid-Structure Interaction — numerical methods, flow control, and fluid–structure problems used across aircraft, energy, and high-performance simulation.
- MSc Composites: The Science, Technology and Engineering Application of Advanced Composites — materials, manufacture, and structural use of advanced composites (the undergraduate and composites MSc routes are also linked to IMechE accreditation activity on the department scholarships page).
Read the course page before you apply. Scholarship assessors see the same file as admissions tutors. A statement written for “engineering in general” is weaker than one that matches the modules, labs, and project culture of the specific MSc.
Who Can Apply for Department of Aeronautics MSc Scholarship 2027
Imperial’s official criteria are short and strict.
You can be considered if you:
- Apply as a new student to one of the three eligible MSc programmes
- Hold (or will hold) Home or Overseas fee status
- Intend to study full time or part time
- Submit a complete application by 1 March 2027
You cannot be considered if you:
- Are already enrolled on the course (continuing students are excluded)

How to Apply (There Is No Separate Form)
Imperial is explicit: there is no standalone scholarship application. Every eligible candidate who files a complete MSc application by the deadline is considered automatically.
Step 1: Choose one eligible MSc
Use the official course pages linked above. You can normally apply for up to two Imperial taught courses in one year on a single application, with first choice considered first. If this scholarship is the goal, make an eligible Aeronautics MSc your first choice.
Step 2: Apply through My Imperial
Create an account and apply online via My Imperial. Do not email a CV to the department and assume you are in the scholarship pool.
Step 3: Make the file complete before 1 March 2027
“Complete” includes the items Imperial needs to assess the MSc — typically academic transcripts, a degree (or predicted result), a personal statement, English language evidence if required, and references. The published rule is academic merit across the admissions process. In practice, that usually means the same signals tutors already use:
- Classification and course content (First or high 2:1 in a closely related degree is the stated direction for Advanced Aeronautical Engineering)
- Evidence you can handle fluids, structures, computation, or composites — depending on the MSc
- A statement that shows you understand this department, not “a top UK university”
- References that comment on technical ability, independence, and readiness for a fast one-year master’s

How to Make a Thin Field Work in Your Favour
Two awards for a global applicant pool is a hard filter. Useful moves:
- Match the degree. Composites experience on the composites MSc is more coherent than a generic aerodynamics story on that course, and the reverse is also true.
- Quantify academic strength. Rank, GPA scale, thesis title, and software (OpenFOAM, SU2, Nastran, Abaqus, and so on) belong in the statement where they are real.
- Ask referees for technical letters, not character letters.
- Apply early enough that a missing document can still be fixed before 1 March 2027.
- Plan living costs in parallel. A tuition win still leaves London rent.
