Crankstart is the San Francisco family foundation of Moritz and Heyman. Education is a large share of its grantmaking. Undergraduate Eligibility: The Rules That Decide the Offer

You do not apply to Crankstart. You apply to Oxford, apply for UK student finance, and allow your regional funding body to share the household-income assessment with the university.

To be offered the undergraduate scholarship you normally need all of the following:

You are commencing your first undergraduate degree at Oxford.
You have been resident in the UK for at least three years, and that residence was not solely for the purpose of education.
Your assessed household income is £32,500 a year or less.
Your income assessment is completed in time (by 30 May of the academic year in which you want the first-year award).

Offers to new first-years start from mid-September and continue on a rolling basis as assessments arrive. A student starting in 2027/28, for example, needs the assessment done by 30 May 2028.

International fee-status students are not the target group for this undergraduate scheme. If your fee status is Overseas, look at Oxford’s other scholarships rather than treating Crankstart as an open worldwide award.

What Undergraduate Scholars Receive

Amounts are reviewed and can rise with living costs. Use the figures that match your year of entry.

For students commencing in 2027

Household income of £7,500 or less: annual bursary of £6,500
Household income between £7,500 and £32,500: annual bursary of £5,600

For students commencing in 2026

Official current-scholar information lists an annual bursary in the range of £6,370 to £5,490, depending on income.

The bursary is non-repayable and is paid toward living costs for each year of the course, subject to the annual reassessment rules Oxford publishes for that cohort.

Internships, Mentoring, and Why the Extra Layer Matters

The cash bursary is only half the design. Crankstart Scholars are expected to use Oxford’s careers machinery, not simply cash the award.

The Crankstart Internship Programme, run with the University Careers Service, offers exclusive vacation placements, advice sessions, a mentoring route, and funding for unpaid or low-paid work that meets the programme rules. Funding is capped (commonly £3,200 a year), hours and duration are limited, and international placements have minimum-length and safety conditions. Deadlines for internship bursary applications are published each year on the Careers Service pages.

Scholars are also encouraged to complete about 25 hours of volunteering a year, often through college or university outreach or Oxford Hub community projects. That is not a hidden exam. It is part of the programme’s attempt to build a cohort, not only a payment list.

How to Trigger the Undergraduate Award

Treat this as a process, not a competition.

Apply to Oxford through UCAS by the Oxford deadline (usually mid-October for the following autumn).
Apply for student finance in England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland as soon as the cycle opens.
Make sure every relevant household member is assessed.
Give consent for the funding body to share income data with the university.
Watch for the Crankstart invitation from mid-September of your first year.

Former undergraduate Crankstart Scholars who take up a taught or research postgraduate place at Oxford can be considered for a Crankstart Graduate Scholarship. This includes full-time and part-time master’s and DPhil courses.

The graduate award covers 100 percent of course fees and a grant for living costs. DPhil awards provide the living-cost grant for four years as standard. Selection uses academic merit and potential, with socio-economic context from the application form. There is no extra Crankstart form. You apply for the course by the relevant November, December, or January deadline. Offer-holders who previously received Crankstart (or the older Moritz-Heyman) undergraduate funding are then considered. Most scholarship offers go out by mid-June.

Practical Checks Before You Count on the Money

Confirm fee status and the three-year residency test early. “UK resident” in everyday speech is not the same as the funding definition.
Do not treat aggregator sites as the source of bursary figures. Oxford updates amounts by entry year.
Care-experienced and estranged students should read the targeted-support pages as well as the main Crankstart page; the extra bursary is applied for, not assumed.
Graduate applicants should still meet the standard Oxford course deadline. Missing that deadline usually removes you from scholarship consideration.
