What Is the Breakthrough Junior Challenge?
The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global video competition run by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation. Julia and Yuri Milner founded it in 2015 as part of a broader effort to celebrate science and to teach the next generation how to share it. The adult Breakthrough Prize honors major work in fundamental physics, life sciences, and mathematics. Since launch, the Challenge has drawn tens of thousands of applications from more than 200 countries and has awarded more than $2.5 million in college scholarships, $1 million toward science laboratories, and $500,000 to science and mathematics teachers.
The Prize Package: $400,000 Across Student, Teacher, and School
The headline number is not marketing fluff. If your video is named the Winner, the package is:
- $250,000 post-secondary scholarship for the student
- $50,000 for one teacher who inspired you in science or mathematics
- Up to $100,000 for a Breakthrough Science Lab at your school, designed with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
That is about $400,000 in educational value.
The student award is a scholarship, not a personal cash check. Official rules state it can be used for education-related undergraduate expenses at an accredited post-secondary institution, including tuition and fees, required books and supplies, and on-campus room and board. It is paid to the institution. It must generally be used within eight years of secondary-school graduation. It is not assignable to another student. Colleges and universities worldwide can qualify if they meet the accreditation standard in the rules.
The teacher prize is a cash gift. Parents, siblings, and grandparents cannot be named as the teacher. The laboratory prize is a renovation or addition coordinated with the school, not a pile of unrestricted cash.

Who Can Enter the Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2026?

How to Apply: Four Steps That Actually Matter
1. Register and prepare documents
Create an account on the official site, then complete the application forms. You will upload a photo and identification for age verification, list parent contact details for release forms, and answer short written questions about yourself, your school, and your topic. 2. Choose one hard idea
Pick a concept in physics, life sciences, or mathematics that is important and genuinely difficult. Chemistry only qualifies if it clearly sits inside one of those three fields, for example biochemistry as life sciences. Crossing categories is allowed if you choose the best fit. Weak topics are either too easy or too broad. Strong topics have a precise claim a viewer can repeat after two minutes.
3. Make a video of 2:00 minutes or less

What Judges Reward
The scoring language is consistent: engagement, illumination, creativity, and difficulty. Engagement means a viewer stays with you. Illumination means they understand something they did not understand before. Creativity means the form is yours, not a copy of last year’s finalist. Practical Advice If You Are Still Entering
Time is short. Do not spend it on a cinematic opening that wastes 20 seconds. State the idea early. Define the terms a non-specialist needs. Show one mechanism or one proof-shaped insight. End on why the idea changes how we see the world. Then cut everything that does not serve those moves.
