What the Cambridge Trust Is (and Why It Matters)
The Cambridge Trust is a charity whose purpose is to open Cambridge to outstanding students who would otherwise be blocked by cost. It is the largest scholarship provider at the University. It makes about 350 new awards each year, supports around 1,500 scholars in residence, and has funded more than 22,000 people from 150-plus countries. In 2024–25 it supported roughly a quarter of the University’s full-time international doctoral students.
It is not an admissions office. It cannot improve your chance of an offer. It funds people who already have, or are about to receive, a conditional offer. That distinction is the first thing strong applicants understand.

What Cambridge Trust Scholarships Actually Pay
Awards fall into two groups.
Full-cost awards typically include:
- University tuition at the international or Home rate
- A maintenance grant sized for a single student
- On selected schemes: student visa and Immigration Health Surcharge
- On partner schemes: one return economy airfare
Part-cost awards contribute a fixed or variable sum toward fees or living costs. Cambridge Trust Masters Studentships, for example, are often around £12,000. Most undergraduate Trust awards for Overseas students are part-cost contributions, not a complete package.
The flagship Cambridge Trust International Scholarship is offered to applicants from countries other than the United Kingdom or Ireland who are highly ranked by their prospective department. Selection is academic ability and research potential. Financial need is not a factor. It can cover international tuition, maintenance, visa, and the health surcharge, and it is tenable at any College in any subject except premium-rate courses.
Vice-Chancellor’s Awards sit in the same family and are designed so the highest-ranked doctoral applicants, including those with Home fee status, can receive a full package.
Undergraduate funding is smaller and more targeted. The Cambridge Trust Global Impact Scholarship is one of the stronger undergraduate options: it can cover the international University fee and the College fee for Overseas applicants with high financial need who have overcome significant barriers. The Trust is the largest player, not the only one. Several major awards use the same Applicant Portal and the same funding deadlines.
1. Gates Cambridge Scholarship
A separate trust, funded by the Gates Foundation. About 75 full-cost postgraduate awards a year for applicants from outside the UK, in any subject. Criteria go beyond grades: academic excellence, reasons for choice of course, a commitment to improving the lives of others, and leadership capacity. US citizens resident in the US apply in an earlier round (14 October 2026 for 2027 entry). Everyone else uses the course funding deadline. .
2. Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholarships
Fully funded PhD awards for any nationality and any discipline. They cover fees, maintenance, visa and health surcharge costs, plus a personal research allowance of up to £6,000 over the course. Around 25 or more awards are made each year. Apply by ticking funding on the Applicant Portal and meeting the course funding deadline. Official site: hardingscholars.fund.cam.ac.uk.
If you accept Gates Cambridge or Harding, a Cambridge Trust offer lapses. Plan your preferences before you reply to an award letter.
3. Commonwealth Shared Cambridge Scholarship
A Trust partnership with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Full-cost Masters awards for applicants from eligible developing Commonwealth countries, on courses relevant to home-country development, with a requirement to return home after the award. 4. Country and partner awards administered with the Trust
The search tool lists dozens of named schemes. Examples include Cambridge Africa Changemakers (full-cost PhD, any African country), Cambridge Australia Scholarships, Cambridge Caribbean Scholarships, Beit Cambridge (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi), Brockmann Cambridge (Mexico), Khazanah Cambridge (Malaysia), Bhutan King’s Scholarship, and King’s Cambridge Commonwealth Scholarships for Small Island Nations. 5. College, departmental, and Home-fee awards
Colleges and departments add joint scholarships. Home-fee Masters students from low-income backgrounds may be considered for Cambridge Opportunity Studentships and Get In Cambridge Studentships. Who Is Eligible for Cambridge Trust Scholarships
For most postgraduate Trust awards you need:
- Significant academic achievement and clear potential
- Financial need for need-based schemes (some awards, including the International Scholarship, are merit-only)
- A new course at Masters or doctoral level (MPhil, MASt, LLM with restrictions, MRes, PhD and integrated 1+3 routes)
- An application submitted by the course funding deadline, with the funding section completed
- A conditional offer of admission
The Trust does not normally fund a second degree at the same or a lower level, does not fund students already on course, and does not offer full-cost support for premium programmes such as the MBA, EMBA, MFin or MAcc unless a partner insists.
Undergraduate Trust awards require a UCAS application by the published deadline, a College offer, and (for most Overseas awards) a funding form issued by the College after the offer. The Trust does not accept direct undergraduate applications.

How to Apply Without Losing Eligibility
There is no separate Cambridge Trust application for most postgraduate awards.
- Choose the course in the Postgraduate Course Directory and note the funding deadline, not only the later application deadline.
- Filter awards on Find a scholarship.
- Submit the University application through the Applicant Portal by 23:59 GMT on the funding deadline, with references in.
- In the funding section, say you wish to be considered and give an honest account of your finances where asked.
- Complete any extra partner form (Commonwealth, Khazanah, University of Central Asia, and similar) by that partner’s own date.
Undergraduate route:
- Submit UCAS by the Cambridge deadline.
- Receive a College offer.
- Complete the Trust form your College sends if you are Overseas fee status.
- Apply separately only where a listing says so.
The Trust’s awards window runs from about February to the end of July. Many offers go out in February and March; partner interviews can push decisions into April–June. Unsuccessful applicants are not individually notified.
Deadlines That Decide 2027 Entry
- Postgraduate applications for 2027/28 typically open in September 2026.
- Main University funding deadlines: 8 December 2026 and 6 January 2027.
- Gates Cambridge US round: 14 October 2026.
- Undergraduate UCAS deadline for Cambridge: mid-October 2026 (confirm on the undergraduate dates page).
- Trust awarding period: February–July 2027.
If you miss the funding deadline, later admission does not reopen Trust consideration.
How Competitive Applications Are Built
Departments rank you. The Trust and partner panels then match ranked candidates to pots of money. That means your research proposal, references, and academic record do more work than a separate “scholarship essay,” except where Gates Cambridge or a partner asks for extra statements.
Practical steps that raise the odds:
- Apply to every scheme you genuinely fit, including partner awards that need a second form.
- Do not rely on the Trust alone if you have financial need; the Trust expects that.
- Treat the funding deadline as the real deadline even if the course stays open longer.
- Check whether your course is a premium-rate programme before you assume full funding exists.
- Keep fee-status documents consistent; Home versus Overseas changes which awards you can hold.
