What the Commonwealth Scholarships Actually Fund

Who Can Apply for Commonwealth Masters and PhD Scholarships 2027/28
Core CSC criteria are similar for both awards:
- Citizen of, or refugee granted status by, an eligible Commonwealth country, or a British Protected Person
- Permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
- Available to start in the UK in September/October 2027
- By September 2027, hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours, or a lower second-class degree plus a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a master’s)

There is no CSC age limit. Employers, however, may restrict study leave. How the Application Really Works
The CSC does not accept direct applications for these two programmes. You must do two things:
- Submit a complete application on CSC Central between 8 September and 20 October 2026, 16:00 BST. Late or emailed documents are not accepted. The form uses two-factor authentication. Prepare answers offline first; the portal gets congested near the deadline.
- Apply to a nominator: usually your national nominating agency (ministry of education, higher education commission, or equivalent) or an invited NGO. Each nominator runs its own shortlisting and may add extra rules, tests, age caps or earlier closing dates.

You should also apply to your chosen UK university in parallel. An offer is not always required at the moment you submit to CSC Central, but PhD applicants in particular need a supervisor relationship and a research proposal that a UK department can credibly host.
