- Online Masters: part-time, up to three years
- Online postgraduate diploma: part-time, up to two years
Online study is designed for people who want to keep working and study in their local context. Edinburgh states that online qualifications through the university are equivalent to degrees taught on campus.
Important limits:
- This track is not an undergraduate scholarship.
- It is not a PhD scholarship.
- You cannot apply for both the online track and the on-campus postgraduate scholarships. Choose one route.
- For the online Masters, you must not already hold a postgraduate degree.

Who Can Apply for University of Edinburgh Mastercard Foundation Online Scholarship
Full criteria live on the official eligibility page. In short, you must meet all of the following for 2027/28:
- Be a resident and citizen of an African country, or hold refugee status in an African country.
- Be 35 or under in the year the programme starts. For 2027/28 that means born on or after 1 January 1992. Anyone born in 1991 or earlier is ineligible.
- Qualify academically for admission to Edinburgh for one of the listed programmes. In practice this usually means the equivalent of a UK Upper Second Class (2:1) bachelor’s degree or higher. Check country-specific guidance via Edinburgh’s postgraduate entry requirements for students from Africa.
- Have graduated from undergraduate study and be able to upload a degree certificate and official final transcript by 19 November 2026.
- Have faced significant barriers to education or early career progress (social, financial, personal, practical, or health-related).
- Show a track record of leadership and service in your community.
- Show experience, or at least clear ambition, to make a meaningful impact on the climate crisis.
- For Masters applicants: not already hold a postgraduate degree, and not be enrolled (or applying to enrol) at another university while on this scholarship.
The programme especially encourages applications from young women, young people with disabilities, and applicants with refugee or displaced status.
Meeting the criteria does not guarantee an invitation to apply, let alone an award.
What the Online Scholarship Pays For
This is a full-tuition award with targeted study support, not a cash grant you can spend freely. According to Edinburgh Global, the online scholarship provides:
- Full approved tuition fees. Scholars do not pay any part of the tuition.
- An academic stipend to support access to a laptop and high-quality internet.

Edinburgh is not funding any online degree a candidate happens to like. The Scholars Program at Edinburgh is built around climate leadership and climate justice across Africa. All scholars join the Climate Leadership Programme. Selection therefore looks beyond grades.

The New 2027/28 Application Process
Do not apply to the University of Edinburgh degree first. For this scholarship you apply to the Scholars Program. Only if you receive a scholarship offer in March 2027 will you be invited to apply for the degree through the university’s standard admissions process.

1. Check eligibility and pick a programme
Read the eligibility rules and the online programme list before you register for a session.
2. Attend a mandatory virtual information session
You cannot reach the application form unless you attend. Online-applicant sessions are:
- 17 September 2026, 4pm UK time
- 22 September 2026, 11am UK time
- 24 September 2026, 3pm UK time

3. Wait for the invitation on 13 October 2026
Eligible attendees are invited through SurveyMonkey Apply. Ineligible attendees are told they cannot proceed.
4. Complete the Applicant Declaration Form
Deadline: 19 October 2026, 5pm UK time. Edinburgh may close this form earlier if it hits an application cap. Finish it as soon as you are invited.
5. Submit the Scholarship Main Application
