This is not a generic scholarship. It is a one-year, in-person Masters at the University of Edinburgh, wrapped around climate justice, leadership, and a return-home impact agenda. Scholars live and study in Edinburgh. They join the university community. They also join a structured Climate Leadership Programme that is part of the award, not an optional extra.
If you are 35 or under in the year the programme starts, hold (or will hold by the document deadline) an undergraduate degree at a strong standard, have faced real barriers to education, and can show leadership plus climate ambition, this is one of the most complete on-campus packages available to African applicants in 2027.

What the on-campus scholarship actually pays for
The official on-campus award covers more than fees. According to the University of Edinburgh Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, the package includes:

The award is for the scholar only. There is no funding for spouses, children, or other dependants. Accommodation is arranged for an individual. If family members travel with you, those costs and visas are your responsibility.

Who can apply for University of Edinburgh Mastercard Foundation Scholarship (2027/28 rules)
You must meet every criterion. Partial matches are not enough.
- You must qualify academically for admission to the University of Edinburgh for one of the listed on-campus programmes. In practice that usually means the equivalent of a UK Upper Second Class (2:1) Bachelor’s (Hons) or higher. Country-specific guidance is on the university’s Africa postgraduate entry pages: Postgraduate entry requirements for students from Africa.
- You must have graduated from undergraduate study and upload a degree certificate and official final transcript by 19 November 2026.
- You must be a resident and citizen of an African country, or hold refugee status in an African country.
- You must show a track record of leadership and service in your community.
- You must show experience, or at least a credible ambition, to make a meaningful impact on the climate crisis.
- You must have faced significant barriers to education and early career. Those barriers can be social, financial, personal, practical, or health-related.
- You must be 35 or under in the year the programme commences. For 2027/28, that means born on or after 1 January 1992. Anyone born in 1991 or earlier is not eligible.
- For a Masters route: you should not already hold a postgraduate degree, and you should not be enrolled (or applying to enrol) at another university while on this scholarship.
The programme especially encourages applications from young women, young people with disabilities, and young people with refugee or displaced status. That is an invitation, not a substitute for the criteria above.

Eligible on-campus Masters programmes
This scholarship is not open to every Masters at Edinburgh. It is a one-year, full-time, on-campus award for a short, climate-linked list. The university states that the list can change, so check it again before you attend an information session.
Current on-campus programmes named by the programme include:

- Data, Inequality and Society (scholarship holders must study in person for the full year)
- Operational Research (the general MSc only, not every specialisation)

No other academic programmes at the University of Edinburgh are eligible for this scholarship.
Choose a programme you can defend in writing. Selection is not only about grades. Assessors look at whether your story, your leadership record, and your climate-justice argument fit the degree.

Climate Leadership Programme: the part many applicants under-sell
Every Mastercard Foundation Scholar at Edinburgh takes part in the Climate Leadership Programme. The point is not a certificate for the CV. The point is to build people who can lead sustainable change in their own countries.
The programme frames leadership as ethical work that produces lasting change, not personal advancement. Official materials describe activities such as climate-oriented placements, workshops, entrepreneurial pathways, and Africa-based climate justice summer schools. On-campus scholars also join the Climate Enterprise School.
If your application only talks about “wanting to study in the UK,” it will lose to applicants who can name a community problem, a climate angle, and a plausible path from the Edinburgh year back home.

How applications are judged
The published selection criteria are:
- Academic merit that qualifies you for admission to Edinburgh
- A record as a transformative leader and service in your community
- Quality of the application against the programme theme of climate justice
- Potential impact on development in your home country
- Evidence that you have faced significant barriers to education
That last point is not a pity clause. It is a design feature of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. Write it with specifics, not slogans.
The 2027/28 process is new. Do not use last year’s method.
The university has changed the process for 2027/28 on-campus and online awards. Applications submitted outside the official system, or from people who skipped the required steps, will not be accepted.
Step 1: Confirm eligibility and pick a programme
Read eligibility and the on-campus programme list first. Decide on-campus versus online before you book a session. On-campus means one year in Edinburgh. Online is a different award, with different programmes and a different life pattern.
Step 2: Attend a mandatory virtual information session (15–24 September 2026)
Attendance is required if you want access to the application. Registering includes a short questionnaire used for a first eligibility screen. Sitting through a session does not guarantee an invitation.

- 15 September 2026, 3pm
- 21 September 2026, 11am
- 23 September 2026, 4pm

Step 3: Wait for an invitation (from 13 October 2026)
Eligible attendees are invited through SurveyMonkey Apply. Others are told they will not proceed.
Step 4: Applicant Declaration Form (deadline 19 October 2026, 5pm UK time)
This is a hard gate. The form can close early once the application cap is reached. Finish it as soon as you are invited.
Step 5: Main scholarship application (deadline 19 November 2026, 5pm UK time)
This is the long form: your story, academics, leadership, climate work or ambition, and impact case. Have your degree certificate and official final transcript ready. English test scores are not required at scholarship stage. If Edinburgh later needs a language test for admission, the programme can help successful scholars arrange one.
Do not apply for the Masters first (in most cases)
If this is the only Edinburgh scholarship you want, apply only for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. If you receive a scholarship offer (expected around March 2027 after interview), you are then invited to apply for the degree through the normal admissions process. People applying for other awards that require an active university application may apply to the degree in parallel.
After submission: assessment, interview, offer, visa year
Published timeline highlights:
- Late November 2026 to January 2027: committee assessment
- Early February 2027: all applicants notified; on-campus candidates invited to interview
- Mid-February to March 2027: on-campus interviews (about 60 minutes by video; references requested at this stage)
- End of March 2027: interview outcomes

How to write an application that survives the first cut
Treat the form as a climate-justice argument, not a biography dump.
- Name the barrier without turning the essay into a catalogue of pain. Show what you did next.
- Give one or two leadership examples with results, not titles. Who changed because you acted?
- Tie your chosen Masters to a concrete problem in your country: food systems, energy access, climate finance, planetary health, inequality in data, or environmental governance.
- Be honest about scale. “I will transform my continent” is weaker than “this degree gives me X method for Y institution or community.”
- Keep documents clean. Late or unofficial transcripts are a common way strong applicants remove themselves.

Why this award is worth the extra process
Edinburgh is a research-intensive university in a capital city with a dense climate-policy and finance scene. The Mastercard Foundation partnership has already supported hundreds of African scholars at the university, with a wider global alumni network across partner institutions. The on-campus year is short. The expectation is that you use it, then take the work home.
That is the test hidden inside every essay prompt: will 12 months in Edinburgh produce something useful in your country, or only a degree certificate?
If you meet the age, academic, residency, leadership, barrier, and climate tests, start with the official pages today, lock a September information session, and treat 19 October 2026 as the first real deadline. The November form is where the story is judged. October is where many people never get the chance to tell it.
