John Piket was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1923. He survived the Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Theresienstadt concentration camps during the Holocaust. Tragically, his mother and younger brother perished in Auschwitz. His father, who had been working in South America, passed away before John could reunite with him after the war.
After World War II, John returned to Berlin and later lived in France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. In France, he became a confidant of the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. In Switzerland, he earned an engineering degree from the prestigious L’École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). In the Netherlands, he met Ankie, the woman who would become his wife.
John and Ankie immigrated to Canada in 1952. They eventually settled in West Vancouver, British Columbia, in the 1970s, where they spent the rest of their lives together. John Piket passed away in 2021 at the age of 98. Through an estate gift, he established an endowment in memory of Ankie (who passed in 1989) to support outstanding graduate business students.
