The Research You Will Conduct

As a PhD student in this lab, you will generate high-quality environmental monitoring datasets from active aquaculture systems at the Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center and surrounding facilities. Your work will span:

  • Field-based water quality assessments — calibrating and deploying probes, conducting routine and event-driven sampling across ponds and watersheds.
  • Biogeochemical analysis — total digestion and sequential extraction techniques on soils and sediments, laboratory analysis of nutrients, dissolved organic matter (DOM), and cations.
  • Advanced data analysis and modeling — statistical computing in R, Python, and MATLAB, combined with geospatial analysis using ArcGIS Pro or QGIS to map spatial and temporal patterns.

Mississippi State University seeks candidates with a Master’s degree in Soil Science, Marine Biology, Wildlife and Fisheries, Agronomy, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Civil/Environmental/Water Resources Engineering, or a closely related field. At least two years of relevant experience demonstrating hands-on laboratory or field skills is expected.
