Many high-achieving Black Canadian students carry extraordinary potential, strong academic records, and deep commitments to their families, schools, and communities. Yet financial barriers and the need for genuine belonging can make the path to a top university feel uncertain. The University of British Columbia created the Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program to change that reality.
This is not simply another entrance award. It is a comprehensive initiative that combines meaningful financial support with a dedicated community of scholars, mentorship, leadership development, and experiential opportunities. The program is designed to help Black students thrive at UBC and graduate as the next generation of leaders who will shape their fields and lift others along the way.
If you self-identify as Black, are planning to enter a direct-entry undergraduate program at UBC, and demonstrate financial need, this opportunity deserves your full attention. Overview of Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program
The Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program supports Canadian students who self-identify as Black (African, African-American, African-Canadian, or Afro-Caribbean). It removes financial obstacles while building a powerful network across UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses.
Scholars receive annual funding of up to $20,000 per year. Awards are structured to be renewable, potentially providing substantial support — up to $80,000 over a typical four-year degree — depending on demonstrated need and continued eligibility. Beyond the dollars, the program creates a true community experience.

Scholars participate in an annual welcome reception, a January leadership retreat focused on skill-building, workshops with mentors and community partners, and a graduation celebration. The cross-campus network connects students with academic advising, career guidance, and opportunities to mentor others. The goal is clear: help scholars focus on their studies and leadership growth while fostering lasting relationships that extend well beyond graduation.
